How would I be able to display my screen on my television and make the sound from my computer come out of my television?

It depends on both your computer and your television. Could you give me the models for each of them? That'd be the easiest way.

Television is an Insignia. Not sure where to check my computer's.

I need the actual model names/numbers. They should be printed somewhere on each device.

    For the television, it's IS-TV040920.

For the computer, it was custom-built, but my mom told me to look up System Information, so maybe that will help. There is a model number.

From the looks of things, your TV doesn't have a connector that can be typically used to connect from a computer (VGA, DVI, or HDMI), probably because it's an older model. You can pick up cables that will go from (for example), VGA to RCA, but that also depends on the connection options from your computer.

Now that I have a flat-panel TV with TV, AV, component, HDMI, and VGA plugins, what cable would I need?

If you're using an HDMI cable it should do it automatically. HDMI transfers sound and video.

    Unfortunately, it isn't.

Do I have to set something up in my computer settings? When we watched movies in Spanish class last school year, our teacher went into some settings to set it to two screens so the projector could project it (I didn't have to do this here for some reason, as it was already set up like that) -- drag it to the right off-screen on the computer monitor to get it on the projector and drag it to the left off-screen on the projector to get it back on the computer monitor -- and she could still work on things, such as the gradebook. In my case, PC -> TV and TV -> PC. Like with me, the sound also still came out of the computer speakers when we watched movies.

So one of my friends has his laptop hooked up to my TV right now, and it's transferring sound, so why is it only transferring video for me when I hook it up to my computer?

You're doing it with a desktop, right? That's probably why. Try right-clicking on the volume icon in the system tray, select Playback Devices, and post a screen of what you have when you're hooked up to the television.

Sound won't automatically go to your tv if you have speakers connected to you PC - your speakers are the default device. Just change your tv HDMI connection to the default device and it should work (Select connection and hit Set Default). It should work cause I just tested it myself. ;P
