My mom decided to do a hard power down (the switch in the back) when the computer was boot and evidenty messed up the partition and several system files. I'll be getting my own laptop soon, but until then the only internet I've got is at school. Hopefully I'll be back soon. I'm starting to feel like a jerk with the RPs I'm in...
Reinstall Windows. If you can't even get a copy of Windows, the Ubuntu site will ship a copy of Ubuntu out to you for free, IIRC.
I've got a recovery disk I can use to reimage the harddrives but I want to get the data off first. And especially knowing that I'll be getting a laptop likely within the week I'll just wait it out rather than throw away tax info, more money than I want to think about in music and movies, etc. So you're right, I could. I simply don't want to.
If you've got a computer that can burn CDs, google Knoppix and put that into the non-working PC. I was able to salvage files off of my sister's old laptop with it, it's basically a version of Linux that you can boot from a CD. Then just reinstall Windows.
All you have to do it get a USB cord or a firewire cable depending on the make of the computer. Then take this and insert into the port located directly behind your ear. Either right or left depending on the dominant hand. You should have received either a disc or had software installed upon birth at the hospital. You didn't? Well then, you're screwed.
In theory I should be able to just attach the old hard drives to the new computer like huge jump drives, transfer the files over, and then reformat/reimage. If that doesn't work I'll have to keep Knoppix in mind. And Pumpkin, I've had way too much time on my hands recently. Over winter break I payed 7 1/2 games. God of War, God of War 2, Jak 2, Star Ocean: First Departure, Final Fantasy 13, Code Lyoko - Quest for Infinity, Dark Cloud 2, and 1/2 of Phantasy Star Universe. Granted that is a wider time line than just my computer crash, but the point stands. I would call a social life here heathy.
