British Man Detained in Morroco for Homosexual Acts

Well... remind me to never visit Morocco because it's evidently a crime to be homosexual there, which means it's probably also a crime to support homosexuals. It's even worse that TEN-YEAR-OLDS are jailed for, I believe, the same reason.

I commend the authorities for showing compassion, I guess, but he should never have been detained in the first place.

A British man released from a Moroccan jail after being arrested for "homosexual acts" has described his ordeal as "horrendous".

Ray Cole, 69, a retired magazine publisher from Deal, Kent, was sentenced to four months in jail after police found images of a homosexual nature on his mobile phone.

On his return to the UK, he said: "I've seen things I never knew existed. It's not a prison, it's a concentration camp.

"I can hardly move my arm now from sleeping on the floor for 20 nights. I just want to get home and sleep in a soft bed.

"Prisoners are aged from 10 to their 80s and 90s. It's been a total nightmare and I won't be going back."

Mr Cole was arrested last month along with Jamal Jam Wald Ness, a 20-year-old from Marrakesh whom Mr Cole had gone on holiday to visit after meeting him online.

The pair were approached at a bus stop by police officers who detained them on suspicion of being homosexual â?" a crime that carries a maximum sentence of three years' jail in Morocco.

Describing his shock at being released, Mr Cole added: "I'm overwhelmed. I didn't expect this at all.

"I thought I was going to be transferred to a different prison and then they said they were sending me home."

Paying tribute to his family, he tearfully added: "I'm so proud of them. I couldn't have a better family."

Following his release his family thanked the Moroccan authorities for "showing compassion".

A statement was posted on Tuesday evening on the Facebook page set up to campaign for Mr Cole's release.

"We are delighted to announce that our dad, Ray Cole has been released from prison and is on his way home," it said.

"We would like to thank each and every one of you here and in Morocco who has helped our campaign to secure the release of our wonderful father.

"We would also like to thank the Moroccan authorities for showing compassion.

"We would ask that you allow us some time as a family to absorb the news and to spend some time with Dad."

Mr Cole was four weeks into a five-week holiday in Morocco when he was detained by police.

Mr Cole's son Adrian told the British website PinkNews that Moroccan authorities had failed to notify his family or the British consulate of the arrest.

The family feared that he was missing for nearly a week before he was finally able to contact them using another prisoner's mobile phone.

I remember a case where two Belgian bus drivers were sent to the Tanger prison for drug trafficking. One of them caught tuberculosis and both suffered severe psychological damage. That was 1996; this is 2014. It's sickening that things haven't improved a rat's scratch in almost two decades, and that's not even going into the nature of this Brit's "crime".
