From the main site's About page:
Another ten-bucker for the 2D throwback connoisseur. This one's an interesting creature: Mixing the play styles of Zelda and Final Fantasy over several generations' worth of graphic and technical innovation? Never knew how bad I wanted it. I just hope you don't have to play too much of the game in 3D mode...

Worth mentioning that you can play the original for free on their website. Whether it serves as an effective demo of the full game, I couldn't tell you.

I'm sure you can tell by the video from whereabouts the game draws inspiration. Available for a flat $9.99 in and out of Steam. Mac and Linux support planned, not sure if they've been fully implemented yet; comments from their Youtube channel seem to suggest that certain aspects are still in the works.

God, but it's so sexy. * w* This is the kind of stuff I hope I see en masse on Steam in the future. Not that it doesn't already have a pretty strong 2D catalogue.

Anyone have it already? If so, what do you think of it? I've begun playing and it's... interesting. I don't want to spoil anything, but it's a pretty unique experience. It plays like a dream - and all that implies.

Did you like the bosses in this game more than any other, or hate them with a passion? Do you like their designs but hate the way they behave, or vice-versa? How's the difficulty treating you: easier or harder? What's your favorite boss in the game, and are they now your all-time favorite or does an earlier game's boss still trump them?

As shall quickly become the standard, Novapinions under the spoiler. Not too many actual plot spoilers, but just in case somebody wants to go into these fights totally blind.

The game wasn't any harder for me, and I'm so-so on many of the boss designs. My reactions ranged from "Oh, that's kinda neat" to "What the what am I looking at." None of them offend the senses, but I don't think they'll stick with me.

...Oh, wait, I lied. I was deeply offended by the Spellican being named Spellican.

I think my favorite boss was the Anti Black Coat Nightmare. Because first off the boss music was bangin'. Seriously though, very clever boss, not only in its attacks but in its AI; it actively punishes you for rushing it down, unless of course you're such a high level you can just power through it, and it uses the large arena both to obscure its moves and keep you at a distance. Seeing an enemy use HP balls against the player was a treat for me. One step closer to my dream of a boss with an HP bar comparable to yours who spams Curaga when he gets low...

The Xemnas fight, although super-easy, gets an award for building in interesting ways on the way he fought in KHII. Seeing some of his latter-form attacks scaled down to reasonable sizes was interesting, e.g. those tumbling buildings are way scarier when there aren't miles and miles of empty space you can fly through to avoid them. And maybe it was just a cheap parlor trick, but I smiled when I saw his energy walls could be jumped using Flowmotion. Way to integrate, guys!

Naturally, spoilers abound, so be careful.

Did KH3D change your opinion about any of the cast? Do you like anyone more or less now? Did they do something in KH3D to impress you or to make you cringe?

I feel like this is gonna be a hot button for this subject, so in anticipation: New Riku. Yea or nay? Reasoning always appreciated.

Nova-flavored opinions under the spoiler. Beware the rampant endgame plot talk.

So. The three characters I like a lot more now are Riku, Xigbar, and Sora. A contributing factor to all three is drastically improved writing/voiceover quality; their lines seem much more natural now, and they have some really great ones throughout...

"You treat hearts like they're bottles on a shelf, but they're not."

"Aren't hearts great? Steer us wrong every time."

"Your mistakes always end up being other people's problems."
"Maybe so. But I'm here to change all that."

Riku's character entered a mire in the Days/KHII era, where he lost all his boyish charm and just became a self-loathing broodpile. 3D brought back his determination and light-heartedness, and that's just what I was hoping to see.

Even as far back as KHII, I always had the feeling that Xigbar played a bigger role than he let on. He was just way too laid-back, too smug about everything, even dying. Like he knew what'd happen. Sure enough, it could be argued he was almost as important in the hierarchy as Xemnas, considering the former helped in the latter's creation. AND WHEN HE SAID "I'M ALREADY HALF XEHANORT" AND THE CAMERA ZOOMED IN ON HIS FACE JFC I LOST MY MIND HE'S BEEN NORTED THIS WHOLE TIME AND NO ONE KNEW KFJSHGKSDGKJSH IMAGINE HOW MUCH HE MUST KNOW HOW MUCH HE MUST'VE SEEN AAAAGH

I've never disliked Sora at all, but he's remained fairly innocent throughout the rest of the series up to now. Considering the tragedy that surrounds him and the number of people who've sacrificed themselves to help him, or whose sacrifices have granted him boons, it was nice to see him come face-to-face with that, really see the consequences and own up to it. He has been kind of carried intermittently throughout his journey, but 3D worked it into his character arc rather nicely, culminating in a reaffirmation of perhaps his most famous line: "My friends... They are my power!" And the way he treats Roxas when they meet again... That really hit me in the gut. He pretty much said what I'd been thinking since Days. Even if he didn't pass the exam, he's earned the right to be called a hero.

All that outta the way... There's one character that kinda bothered me. Lea. I've been back and forth on Axel; sometimes I like him, sometimes I just really want him to go away. As much as I enjoy his characterization in this game, how he bounces back from all the tragedy that befell him and maintains his laid-back, cocky demeanor... he also has some seriously goofy lines, in a game that is otherwise exceptional for its voice work. Guarantee nobody's gonna forget "'Dark Rescue' is my middle name" for a while. Honestly, it's Flynn's delivery that bothers me most; some lines seem out of his comfort zone, especially when he's showing off in front of Master Xehanort. It almost sounds like his voice is cracking when he says "You had your perfect little script, but you kinda forgot to write the sequel." That said, the character's actual involvement in the plot is aces as far as I'm concerned, and I like the idea of a former Org. member becoming a... 'light warrior', if you will. Sort of the opposite of what Xehanort was hoping for, innit?

I just asked to have this added, and Misty did it on the spot. What a pal! Figured I'd share it with everyone else. Code is as follows: [*paragraph]text[/paragraph] with the asterisk removed, of course.

Here's what it looks like in action. As you can see, it generates a slight indent, effective only on the first line of text wrapped in the code.

In the case of adjacent codes, it also adds more line spacing to aid readability.

    So hey, there's that. :L

This is a bit from House of Leaves that I thought I should share. Something sublimely dreadful about it, and now I can't get it out of my head. Haunting. More haunting than anything before or after. The context: a description of a dream had by one Will Navidson, during a series of night terrors.

Mia Haven entitles her analysis of Dream #1: "Wishing Well: A Penny For Your Thoughts . . . A Quarter For Your Dreams . . . You For The Eons." Unfortunately, as her treatment is difficult to find and purportedly exceeds 180 pages, it is only possible to summarize the contents here.

As Haven recounts, Navidson's first dream places him within an enormous concrete chamber. The walls, ceiling, and floor are all veined with mineral deposits and covered in a thin ever-present film of moisture. There are no windows or exits. The air reeks of rot, mildew, and despair.

Everywhere people wander aimlessly around, dressed in soiled togas. Toward the centre of this room there lies what appears to be a large well. A dozen people sit on the edge, dangling, their feet inside. As Navidson approaches this aperture, he realizes two things: 1) he has died and this is some kind of half-way station, and 2) the only way out is down through the well.

As he sits on the edge, he beholds a strange and very disconcerting sight. No more than twenty feet below is the surface of an incredibly clear liquid. Navidson presumes it is water though he senses it is somewhat more viscous. By some peculiar quality intrinsic to itself, this liquid does not impede but actually clarifies the impossible vision of what lies beneath: a long shaft descending for miles ultimately opening up into a black bottomless pit which instantly fills Navidson with an almost crippling sense of dread.

Suddenly next to him, someone leaps into the well. There is a slight splash and the figure begins to sink slowly but steadily toward the darkness below. Fortunately after a few seconds, a violent blue light envelops the figure and transports it somewhere else. Navidson realizes, however, that there are other figures down there who have not been visited by that blue light and are instead writing in fear as they continue their descent into oblivion.

Without anyone telling him, Navidson somehow understands the logic of the place: 1) he can remain in that room for as long as he likes, even forever if he chooses—looking around, he can tell that some people have been there for thousands of years—or he can jump into the well. 2) If he has lived a good life, a blue light will carry him to some ethereal and gentle place. If, however, he has lived an "inappropriate life," (Navidson's words) no light will visit him and he will sink into the horrible blackness below where he will fall forever.

The dream ends with Navidson attempting to assess the life he has led, unable to decide whether he should or should not leap.

Chilled me in particular because the feeling of sinking is one of my worst fears. I've nearly drowned twice, both as a child: once by accidentally wandering into the deep end of a pool, and once during an outing with the Cub Scouts where I jumped feet-first into a lake too abruptly for my water wings to stay on. I'm still a poor swimmer, so bodies of water in general unnerve me, especially when I can't see their depth. I also don't consider myself very "appropriate" by traditional Christian standards, which do still cling to me from my childhood. Forming my own morals has been a rocky process.

So, thoughts? Interpretations? What do you think is the significance of the chamber, and the mineral deposits lining the walls? of the people dressed in togas? of the well? Is it truly an image of Purgatory, or is there something deeper there? Does it scare you? Do you think you could make the best of things if you stayed in the chamber? And, perhaps the most important question: Would you jump?

They've been called the Finnish Rammstein... by Rammstein themselves. That should tell you a lot about what you're going to hear. One of my favorite bands at the moment. Their lyrics are dark, though not so much in a brutish, violent way. Been a major inspiration in my writing lately, especially "Darmstadt" and "Elon Tiellä."

This website appears to have translated many of their songs ("Darmstadt" being the one displayed there), but it doesn't seem to have an accessible home page. Instead, just enter in the url the album and song name you're looking for (The Wiki article has a discography), no spaces, no special characters, and see if it comes up. Works well enough for me.

Wherein you post weird things that you don't think anyone else does, and see if you're right or not. Please try not to post just to say "Hey I do that," otherwise we'll run out of content quickly. Leave some weirdness of your own!

    I'll start us off:

I have such an insatiable love of mozzarella that I sometimes rip it out of the crust of cheese sticks/Pizza Hut stuffed-crust pizza and eat it bare. I even cook my mozza sticks 'til the cheese oozes out, since it becomes easier to remove when it cools. (And before you ask, just buying plain, crust-less mozza sticks would be silly because they're not cooked, and they'd turn to a big pile of mush if I put 'em in the oven. Not to say I don't eat them as well.)
