It is completely acceptable in IM etc as it is a way to shorten the time it takes to send messages etc. Also, in text messages where it was originally used (I think), it was used to cut down the cost of sending messages. I don't think it has much use in written english, such as in school, exams or the workplace. As long as it is not over-used in speech I think it's ok and quite funny actually. But I HATE it when I can't tell what someone is saying because they have taken all of the inportant letters out

I get that all the time, mainly on msn though. I talk to people and if they don't reply within a certain amount of time I think they are ignoring me and that they hate me. One time I was talking to someone for 20 minutes with no reply from them. It turned out they hadn't got any of the messages then they all came through at once >|
