Good point, equality is based on what we perceive as the standard among people. If we say everyone should receive equal health-care treatment (for example), how far does that equality go? Should special circumstances be taken into consideration such as key workers or intential bad health (e.g. smoking, alcoholism etc)? How about housing for all? Should a single unemployed person get a house over a family? The list goes on >_> In truth this is another situation where each case needs to be looked at individually, a sweeping statement of "Equality for all in all things" would never work.
I don't see how they do. The American system is much more skewed towards the free market system. Admittedly they are similar, but not as close as you seem to believe. In America hospitals are run like businesses, they aim to make a profit through medical insurance. The only free healthcare provided is the absolute bare minimum to keep you alive. Anything above and beyond that has to be paid for. In the UK the NHS will pay for or at least subsidise part of the cost of the treatment. Hospitals are run to provide a service and then they try to at least break-even. We also have private healthcare and education for those that have enough money.
That.....................was so disturbing >< If I had grown up with that, I would be scarred for life >_> We have road traffic accident ads instead with small children getting smashed by cars and their parents crying over their lifeless bodies while the words say "Don't Drink and Drive". I would leave the room or turn over or turn off the tv when they came on and would wait a good 5 minutes just to be sure...............
I feel shocked and dismayed to not be included on this list D: You are my FAVOURITE stalker. I fired all my other stalkers and gave you exclusive stalking rights AND THIS IS HOW YOU REPAY ME?! ................*sniff*
The UK has a system which is close what I described in effect. I am not saying it's perfect, but it's better than in most countries. We have the NHS, education is (mostly, I have to pay school fund, which I found out you don't actually have to pay >_>) free, we have the Welfare State to catch anyone falling out of the economy and we have our public transport system. But we also have the private sector where people can work for their money, for promotion, for recognition and for themselves. We have the Competition Commision to prevent monopolies occuring (ignoring the government created ones *cough* >_>) and numerous government watchdogs which monitor different industries so that they are fair to the consumer. It is true that those with money influence, that will happen in any system. All systems will be imperfect always. Unless you take away the imperfections that make us human, you will never have a perfect system. Here is a quote: "It has been said that Democracy is the worst form of government, except all the others that have been tried" -Winston Churchill That quote means that whatever system is adopted, it is going to be bad. The trick is to choose the lesser of the evils. In this case I think that is the mixed economy.
I think that the best idea would be to combine the both. Extremes tend to never work, in any circumstance. Compromise is needed. The safety nets of communism, so that those without out work can survive, everyone has access to health-care, education, electricity, water etc. But there should also be the competition created by capitalism. If you don't have any hope of promotion, why would you bother to work hard? If you're wage would never be raised, why bother? People need motivations, and capitalism provides that motivation. A point I was going to my in my original post (but I forgot -___-) was that I have always believed that the smaller a country is the better it is. A massive country has the problems of providing services to all areas equally, corruption (generally increasing the further you are away from centres of government, although some may argue the most corruption is in the government centre's). Smaller countries can manage themselves much better. I just think that there is a critical size that a country passes where it just can't control itself to the maximum effect (lol that made no sense -___-)
YEAH, I am going to make that part of my sig more noticable now ^^
I feel shocked and dismayed at not being included on this list T_T
