Maybe it's a factor of how long it's off of the body and not how far. Either way, keeping his head away from him would kill him.
I've no clue if proximity is a factor in whether or not he would survive, but I know he can survive a decapitation. His head won't regenerate, so...

Trying to hold her composure after seeing the Materials die, Fate couldn't help but let a single tear break through. She then tried to shake it off as she charged at Thoma behind Marluxia, readying Bardiche. "Bardiche, Scythe Form!" "Yes, sir. Scythe Form." Bardiche repeated, changing it's form to that of a scythe. She then raised the Scythe, ready to strike Thoma with it. Wesker, still trying out new things with his Ancient Belkan magic, attempted a bind on Thoma to keep him on place. "Nightmare Grip!" Wesker called, trying to bind Thoma. Doom, being the self-righteous D-Bag that he is, decided to sit back and watch. Besides, their goal was to subdue Thoma, not kill him. Doom would possible end up doing the latter.
Hmm...Infectious Grip? nah...Nightmare Grip, maybe? It's named after one of his Hyper Combos in MvC3, "Lost in Nightmares". What do you think?
