Women, to be honest, would be boring. Already long covered with the whole Suffragettes. You need something that is fresh and present. The youth thing is good, and as you said there is plenty out there about it. Gays...there isn't actually that much, I don't think, of the kind of stuff you are looking for. The media doesn't really tend to portray them as anything. People watch things on the news about them and then form their own opinions.
Youth. The BBC had an article recently about how the youth of the UK are unfairly demonised. How the media portrays all of us as little shits who would like nothing more than to stab you just because you looked a bit funny at them. It had quite a lot of statistics and maybe links to the original research =]
