Our school went to the High Court to see if their rules were legal and within the constraints of human rights. They won the court case (although they did back off for a while). The point is, if you choose to go to a school or work in a job, you have to abide by their rules.

Boys hair is not allowed to touch the collar at our school, be of an extreme style, be a number one cut etc. If your job involves interacting with the public a lot then they will probably have it as part of their uniform policy. You are representing them to the public after all. There could also be health and safety issues.
