Have you tried Malwarebytes? It's pretty good, and it notifies you of identified infections as soon as it's detected instead of at the very end....

If Spybot fails, might I suggest Malwarebytes if you haven't tried it? I have it and it gets the job done pretty good.
What scanner are you using?
Have you tried starting a scan and not touching the laptop until it's done? If you're using it while it's scanning, it can cause problems.
