I never played GBA version, but don't start on proud mode for Sora on your first try, you'll wish you hadn't. Riku's isn't as bad though, and he shouldn't give you much trouble with any difficulty you choose.

I got it fighting Saix. It actually helped me avoid his berserk attacks.
If there were accessories and armor they'd probably be things to up players stats. simple stuff.
Probably potions and other items like that.
