It's not a direct sequel, and couldn't you like a game even if it has very little to do with its predecessor? And those other complaints just sound like plot.

I've heard excellent things about both. I played Chrono Cross at 10 and was consistently confused, and I was playing several other games when I started Persona. And I was just given 15 dollars from a friend.

They're all pretty one-dimensional, particularly Terra. His plot is an overused Square device and it worked less well in the style of Kingdom Hearts. Also, the worlds in BBS are the worst of the bunch in level design. And replaying the same game three times isn't that fun.
