Yep, Ninetails is based off of Kyuubi anyway. xD As is the Okami Ninetails. Which is significantly more badass than both of the aforementioned.
It's actually a mythical monster that Naruto just took. It's real name is Kyuubi-no-Kitsune, literally meaning "Nine-tailed Fox". Same goes with all the other tailed beasts, I believe.
