More or less, yes. When I was at a video game concert last month, one of the last songs they played they announced as "And now a song from Final Fantasy..." and the MC let the audience scream out numbers, when someone said "THIRTEEN" everyone went silent for a second and then started booing. Then One-Winged Angel happened and it was beautiful.

IMO VII has an amazing story, but I really haven't gotten that far in IX to judge against that. So I guess it may be better for you to read a quick summary of the main stories for each game and decide for yourself what kind of story you want to play from there.
