The darkness in one's heart doesn't make the person evil. But if they can't overcome it they might turn evil. I guess when he got the keyblade it helped release the light in him to help him overcome the darkness. Plus Sora's too good hearted to become evil. And Riku was overcome by the darkness before he could get the keyblade and didn't get a keyblade until the darkness was gone or losing. Least that's what I think.
