It was a warm summer evening in the Winchester based children's home where the greatest young minds in the world were assembled to be raised and trained to become the next World's Greatest Dectective. Though the time had long passed when the youngsters there's goal was to become the next L, they were now aspiring to become the new N. The title L was no longer for the Greatest Detective, it was one for N's second. A replacement for Watari if you will. But on this evening the children had once again been gathered before the vast plasma screen with the black Old English Font 'N' glowing softly against a white background stretched across it.

"Hello children." Came the robotic mixed voice they had come to know as Near.
"Hello Near!" They replied in unison, as they always did. Leaving a faint smile on the lips of the man behind the microphone, though of course they didn't know that.

"Tonight I have some very special news for you all, something that means a great deal to all of you I'm sure: I'm planning to retire." He said, dropping the bombshell onto the children and carers alike. However he was breifly interupted by a different voice going through the same filter, a person who was evidently in the same room as him.

"I know you're white-haired but I didn't think you were that old!" The voice said with a giggling feel to it. Leaving the younger of the children in stitches and the adults, who knew full well who the female voice was, muttered their disapproval of her amongst themselves.

"Yes, thank you L." Near's mixed voice muttered defensively. "Now, you all know what this means I hope: It means I'll be watching my shortlist of successors, you know who you are. Your cases shall be delivered to you all within the week along with futher details. Good night children."
"Good night Near!"
"Nighty night ya rabble." Came the female voice again as there was a faint thud, leading to the conclusion that Near may of been shoved out of the way.
"Night L!" The children giggled as the connection was cut, they were all shepared out to their rooms if they were little or let to go to common rooms if they were older.

Once the kids were safely out of earshot the new manager, a youngish woman of around Near's age with chesnut brown hair turned to face the others. "What are we going to do!?"

• Near has announced his impending retirement to the Wammy children and staff.
• They shall be paired up and given a case that doesn't interest Near or the rest of the SPK to solve. The best pair will then go head to head in a case that Near and L would normally solve to see who gets there first.

History: Lana was once a scrawny wreck of a girl who believed herself to be the ugliest most unlovable creature on the face of the planet. However after joining the SPK just after the first Kira case had died down she soon found herself caught up in a second Kira case, one that made the first look like a warm-up round. During the chaos she found herself spending more and more time with a man she'd previously despised: Near. And with time she soon fell deeply in love with him, but never once thought anything would come of it. How things change.
Personality: Sarcastic and normally rather cheerful. Has a tendancy to slink back into her old slightly depressed ways at times though.

History: Since the first Kira incident and the second, he looked for answers, but he simply stopped when he found out that Lana and Nate had finished it before he did. Simply, he was heart broke by the news but let his simple avenue of hope let him be like he was before the case, he stayed with the two, just in case things came up again.
Personality: Dark, normally crude with sexual humor sometimes. Has a tendency to never fall asleep when needed to be.

Personality: Cocky and carefree on the outside, but with a mind filled with fear inside. Not that she'd ever let it on to just anyone.

History: The adopted child of Mello, she was found by Mello and Mellody, his girlfriend, and would-of-been-wife at the times, at the young age of 4, with her father meeting his untimely demise at the hands of Kira 4 years later. Before Mello had found her, she had been a very lonely girl and had avoided most people, living on the streets and barely managing to stay out of public eye. Just 8 years back, her adoptive-mother died at the hands of the second-Kira. She was then transferred over into the custody of a Lana Louise Lawliet(Rivers), however confirmation on if this person has regarded her and cared for her is absent from legal documents. She is now a contendant for either the ‘N’ or ‘L’ titles, with a personal preference to ‘L’ and hoping to return it to it’s former-leadin glory.
Personality: Shy, and somewhat depressed, yet, far from quiet, refraining from making openly loud or embarrassing statements publicly, she will usher challenges without a second thought.
