Television Nickelodeon Mulls Return of Classic Shows

Before SpongeBob SquarePants, before Dora the Explorer, before “iCarly,” there was still Nickelodeon.

The Viacom-owned kiddie outlet rose to notice on the backs of programs like “The Adventures of Pete & Pete,” “Double Dare” and “Hey Dude!” And now, its top programming executive suggested, the network is considering ways to bring a small handful of its oldest programs back to its schedule.

“We are looking at our library to bring back ideas, shows that were loved, in a fresh new way,” Russell Hicks, president of content and development at Nickelodeon, told Variety.

Under the plan, the network might seek to experiment with retooled versions of classics that could include “Rugrats,” “Hey Arnold!” “You Can’t Do That on Television” or “Victorious.” The shows might not come back as series, but could appear in other formats, like a movie or special. And they likely would not constitute the bulk of the network’s development efforts.

Hicks declined to talk about specific programs under consideration, but noted the generation that watched Nickelodeon in its earliest days — it was formed out of an entity known as Pinwheel backed by a predecessor of Time Warner Cable — now has children of its own. “We are getting ready to bring back some of the ones they’ve told us multiple times they want to have brought back,” said Hicks.

Some might say the effort has quietly begun. Kel Mitchell, co-star of the popular Nickelodeon series “Kenan & Kel,” will have an ancillary role in “Game Shakers,” a new series set to debut Sept. 12.

Below, a look at some Nick hits of yore, and some thoughts on how they might be made relevant to today’s viewers:

“Doug”

Years on Nick: 1991 to 1994

Premise: Hero Doug Funnie must navigate around nemesis Roger Klotz while wooing the girl of his dreams, the fabulous Patti Mayonnaise.

Modern twist?: The advent of social networks and mobile devices could deepen storylines around one of this program’s central themes: how to deal with bullies.

“You Can’t Do that On Television”

Years On Nick: 1979 to 1990

Premise: A sort of “Saturday Night Live” for kids, “You Can’t Do That….” featured a series of comedic sketches built around a relevant theme, and also helped introduce the world to host Christine “Moose” McGlade, singer Alanis Morissette (who appeared as an actor in five episodes) and Nickelodeon’s iconic green slime.

Modern twist?: Borrow more from “SNL,” with a cast of “Not Ready for Play Time Players” who generate reaction and gossip on social media.

“Clarissa Explains It All”

Years On Nick: 1991 to 1994

Premise: Melissa Joan Hart played protagonist Clarissa Darling, who had to contend with the usual array of pre-teen angst and rivalry with younger brother Ferguson while commenting on the action directly to the viewers of the show.

Modern twist?: Should best friend and boy next door Sam still be allowed to climb directly into Clarissa’s room with the help of a nearby ladder? Rivalry between Ferguson and Clarissa is toned down as pre-teen relationships with families are depicted in most media as improving.

“Hey Arnold!”

Years on Nick: 1996 to 2004

Premise: Animated Arnold and street-smart pal Jerald help kids in the town of Hillwood while grappling with Helga, a passive-aggressive romantic foil.

Modern twist?: More emphasis on Arnold’s hardscrabble roots — he lives in a boarding house owned by his grandparents — to play upon the themes of economic divide and wealth gap that trouble the nation so much today.

“Mr. Wizard’s World”

Years on Nick: 1983 to 1990

Premise: The famous Don Herbert used this venue to continue his decades of on-air science experiments with a kiddie assistant.

Modern twist?: Hire Neil deGrasse Tyson to lift young minds with talk of gravity, the cosmos and physics.

Support Solved Microsoft Security Essentials Scan Gets Stuck

Guess I'll take up my mom's offer to have her help me switch to Charter Security Suite tonight, because I don't know what the ****ing problem is. It got further this time, but now it's stuck again, and this wasn't a problem before!

In the grand scheme of things, it's not too big of a deal, because I've never gotten a virus, but it's annoying!

Alternatively, perhaps the built-in Windows Defender, what I now use on laptop, is good enough.

Same-Sex Marriage Now Legal in All 50 States
I'm not sure whatever happened with that Texas one, but the Kentucky clerk who defied the Supreme Court's ruling to issue marriage licenses to all couples has now being ordered to jail for failure to obey.

She's religious, I get it (as I'm all for equality, I have nothing against religious people), but she doesn't have to agree with it, she just has to issue marriage licenses to all couples by order of the law.

ASHLAND, Ky. (AP) - A defiant county clerk was sent to jail for contempt Thursday after insisting that her "conscience will not allow" her to follow a federal judge's orders to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

"God's moral law conflicts with my job duties," Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis told U.S. District Judge David Bunning. "You can't be separated from something that's in your heart and in your soul."

The judge said she left him with no alternative but to jail her, since fines alone would not change her mind. A federal marshal escorted her, without handcuffs, out of the courtroom.

"Her good faith belief is simply not a viable defense," Bunning said, noting that allowing an individual's beliefs to supersede the court's authority would set a dangerous precedent.

"I myself have genuinely held religious beliefs," the judge said, but "I took an oath."

"Mrs. Davis took an oath," he added. "Oaths mean things."

Hundreds of people chanted and screamed, "Love won! Love won!" as word reached the dueling crowds outside.

The judge also told all five of the clerk's deputies, including her son, Nathan Davis, that they are free to issue licenses to all applicants while Davis is held in contempt, but would also face fines or jail if they refuse to comply. He told them to meet with lawyers and consider their fates before returning to his courtroom later Thursday to reveal their decisions.

Davis is being represented by the Liberty Counsel, an organization that advocates in court for religious freedoms. Her lawyer argued that the deputy clerks cannot issue licenses against Davis' authority, but the judge overruled this objection.

Before she was led away, Davis explained that the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in June that legalized gay marriage nationwide conflicts with the vows she made when she became a born-again Christian.

"I promised to love Him with all my heart, mind and soul because I wanted to make heaven my home," Davis said during about 20 minutes of emotional testimony. She described how she became a Christian and said she is unable to believe anything else.

April Miller, who has been denied a marriage license four times since the high court's ruling, testified that she voted for Kim Davis last year and has no desire to change the clerk's personal beliefs. She simply wants to be treated equally in the community where she lives, she said. One of Davis' deputies told her to apply in a different county, but "that's kind of like saying we don't want gays or lesbians here. We don't think you are valuable," she said.

Outside, demonstrators shouted, sang and waved signs. A small plane flew overhead, displaying a "Stand Firm Kim" banner.

Davis, an Apostolic Christian whose critics mock her for being on her fourth marriage, stopped issuing licenses to all couples after the Supreme Court ruling, and the courts have consistently ruled against her since then. But many supporters have rallied around her, including Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, who called her personally the day before.

"People are calling the office all the time asking to send money," she testified. "I myself have not solicited any money."

Davis said she hopes the Legislature will change Kentucky laws to find some way for her to keep her job while following her conscience. But unless the governor convenes a costly special session, they won't meet until next year. "Hopefully our legislature will get something taken care of," Davis told the judge.

Until then, the judge said, he has no alternative but to keep her behind bars as long as she refuses to follow the law.

"The legislative and executive branches do have the ability to make changes," Bunning said. "It's not this court's job to make changes. I don't write law."

Davis served as her mother's deputy in the clerk's office for 27 years before she was elected as a Democrat to succeed her mother in November. As an elected official, she can be removed only if the Legislature impeaches her, which is unlikely in a deeply conservative state.

Judge Bunning is the son of Jim Bunning, the Hall of Fame pitcher for the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies who served two terms as Kentucky's junior U.S. Senator. Former Republican President George W. Bush nominated David Bunning for a lifetime position as a federal judge in 2001 when he was just 35 years old, halfway through his dad's first term in the Senate.

But Bunning has been anything but a sure thing for conservative causes, ruling in 2007 to overturn a partial-birth abortion ban, and in 2003 to allow a Gay-Straight Alliance to meet on their high school campus.
