Crysis doesn't some what surprise me. Not many have such hi-spec computers that can handle it. But it is a problem. It depends on what is popular at the time. Which for western gamers are shooters. Also hype plays a huge factor, if the game appears from under the radar it's not going to do well as a medicore highly hyped game even if the game is amazing. =/

The actual gameplay won't help much, but you find in most FPS's have cut-scenes that talk a bit about the history of it. But honestly it won't be as factual as a book or video on the matter. It will give you basic knowledge. =/

I know you mentioned Gametrailers, but I would like to go a bit further into a certain thing at that site. The Bonus Round - it's a chatshow with people from the gaming industry talking about the system wars, certain consoles, even on blogging and Uwe Boll. XD I think it's a good inside into the gaming media beyond just talking about games.
