Or maybe the writers were trying to do something a bit more serious. I mean, look at it. These two have been enemies all their lives, and yet they sit together in their final moments of life, realizing that fighting each other was a wasted effort, because no matter who or what we are, we all have emotions and share similar wants and passions. And Tom and Jerry episodes can be seen as one shot story collections. I mean, I don't remember something happening in one that was carried over or affected another episode.
