Well anyway, Riku (in the older pic of himself) is 16, because he is 1 year older than Sora, and Sora is 15 in KH2.

That first pic is actually when he was a kid. I mean, that's what it showed in the flashbacks. Even so, his hair did grow longer ever since KH1 though. Like in the flash backs of him and Sora walking into the secret place.
I'm probably gonna get this game when it's released also. Can't wait for new info.
I also think they were more useful in KH2. Not only with the reaction commands though, but they also had better combos.
