I've actually listened to a bit of them, never exactly got into it. The genre mix is interesting, and that's made me listen to some of their work a bit more often. To be honest, I only discovered them a few months ago. They're interesting to say the least.
According to Nomura, yes, it's basically a prelude to 3D. It's just to set things up and created drama.

He and Ellie were taken in by Dead Bones and given intense combat training. Eventually, Zach and Ellie own a small bar in the Dead Bones hideout to serve alcohol after missions.
