Soccer comes from the word "Association" which referred to the original English football leagues, I believe. Association football. Yes, the Americans did not invent the term Soccer, the English did. So any dislike in regards to terminology is horribly misplaced! Football is a very general term. Rugby is technically considered football due to the act of kicking the ball within the game, and from this American football gets its name, shortened to football.
