    Soccer comes from the word "Association" which referred to the original English football leagues, I believe. Association football.
    Yes, the Americans did not invent the term Soccer, the English did. So any dislike in regards to terminology is horribly misplaced!
    Football is a very general term. Rugby is technically considered football due to the act of kicking the ball within the game, and from this American football gets its name, shortened to football.

    An anime from a year or so ago with an apparently lovely concept but an apparently horrible execution.
    It dealt with something called the Fractale System which used similar hard-light holographic "avatars" of people, of sorts, if I recall correctly.
    Amusingly enough, it was a bit dystopian apparently?
