It was late night by the time the truck reached the sanctuary in the forest. Vanille had said it would only take an hour, but there were roadblocks everywhere, and they almost got caught so many times is wasn't even funny. Their stops between the four or five hours of driving were at least twenty minutes each, and they had drifted so far from the road every time that it was a mystery they hadn't gotten lost.

At last, the truck came to a stop in front to a large house. Harley raised an eyebrow; this wasn't the place he had come to last time. He looked questioningly at Vanille and she smiled. " You didn't think I was gonna let you give away where we were really going, were you? " she said with a giggle. She was more careful than that, for sure.

Harley walked around to the back of the truck while Vanille hopped her way up to the mansion to unlock it. They had driven around the back, so there was a good chance they wouldn't be noticed here until tomorrow night.

"Sorry about the long right, guys," he told the group in the back of the truck, motioning them out, "We're finally here. Vanille will take you to the rooms we'll be sharing."

On cue, the small, bouncy girl appeared and guided the all in to the ominous-looking mansion. " There shouldn't be anyone here, hopefully." Vanille said, slightly doubtful, " But we should be safe for the night. "

Eventually, she led them all to a very large room where there were lots of blankets and pillows laying around, as if someone had been expecting their arrival. Vanille frowned at the room, but kept her thoughts to herself.

" For the wounded, it's time to change your bandages. " That process was over and done with in a few fast minutes. " Tomorrow, we'll talk about what we'll do next . . ." Harley rubbed the back of his neck, " Any questions, comments, or concerns?"

Marina's taste was left on Harley's lips even long after she had gone. He wondered if that really would be the last time he saw her . . . Probably best not to think about it.

Casey had pulled himself together pretty face; Harley had to admit that he was impressed with the way the kid was handling the situation. They were guided down the dark hall; when they stopped, Harley put all senses on alert, but their guide seemed to have found something, " Oh, Wallace . . . " he murmured to himself sadly, kneeling down to what seemed a few large bags.

So that Wallace-servant hadn't been in on the turning-in thing, had he? It was kind of sad, now that the guy was dead, but this was pretty convenient . . .

" We have some supplies . . . Let's take what we have to and go. "

" This is good, " Harley commented lightly, " Thanks, Wallace. " he said, even though the servant would never hear it.

Vanille moved over to help Casey support the back he was having trouble with, and Harley grabbed one of his own. He looked back at Temperance and the others, " Don't just stand there, " he said coolly, " The faster we move, the faster we get to see your precious Cherno. "

When what they needed was gathered, Harley took point and led them down the rest of the cool passageway. After at least fifteen minutes of walking, Harley nearly ran into a wall. He motioned for the others to stop and set down the bag he carried. Looking up, he saw glum light seeping through was looked like . . . a square ceiling door. How to get up there? Ah, a ladder. Good - it wasn't very high either.

" Alright, " he told the others, " I'll go up first. If you hear yell 'passage', that means you stay down here - no matter what happens. I'll give you the all-clear when I check around. " Vanille gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder and he nodded at her, taking a breath, and then climbing the ladder.

The square door was a bit heavy, but he only lifted it a little to check around. The smell of the sea hit his nose and he found that there was a large wooden building that looked way outdated. He pushed up the door a little more and was able to stick his head out. It didn't seem like anyone was around; this area had probably been bombed, too. He slowly stepped out into the cool sea air and let the door close below him quietly.

As fast as he could, Harley scanned the moor and found that there wasn't a soul in sight. Off in the distance, he saw the back of the Heckles estate and wondered what was going on in there and if . . . Kallisti and Marina were still alive. He must have been out there for too long because he heard the ceiling door open again; Vanille was checking for him. Harley signaled the all-clear.

They moved the bags onto the surface and against the old wooden building.

" Okay, we need to wait for Kallisti, " he explained, looking alertly around the area, " She'll be here with a truck and we can all load in there, along with this supplies, but until then, it'd be best if the rest of you waited in the tunnel. I'll call you out when she gets here. "

The both of them took deep breaths, and Kallisti almost had the urge to hug Marina. No, thank you. She was told to wait until things settled, and altogether she had a very terrible feeling about this.

" Do take care not to die. It would be rather fruitless in your endeavors, whatever they may be. You need to make it out alive so that we may settle our differences. Plus, who else am I going to talk to about your delicious cousin? "

There was that urge again . . . Kallisti gave a half-nervous laugh. The question had lifted both their spirits, but only for a moment, and then it was over. Marina walked up the cellar steps with a confidence that seemed to come from nowhere, and Kallisti silently sent her luck to the other girl.

    " Excuse me boys, "

Kallisti moved against the farthest, darkest corner of the cellar where she was sure not to be found and waited. Her eyes closed, and as she heard the head soldier's cold, cruel voice, she tried to pretend to be somewhere else. Marina would be okay. She had to be okay. Who was Kallisti kidding? This was Crestatia's game. No one was every okay.

Getting through was not going to be easy, but luckily, they all seemed to be near the entrance of the estate, where as she could sneak out back. After a few minutes, things got quiet and Kallisti took it as her cue to go. She gripped her bow and made way towards the stairs, ascending them as quietly and carefully as she could. She could see the kitchen diagonal from where she stood, and then hugged the right side of the cellar entrance. She peered around the corner to her left, and then slipped down the hallway to her right.

All the while, her heart thumped heavily in her chest. Like the last fifty-something days, this would come to pass too, wouldn't it? Kallisti was scared . . .

And because she nearly got lost in her thoughts, she had to dive into a lounge while two socializing troops passed right by her, on the other side of the wall she hid behind. She took a few moments to calm herself and then left the room, heading for the back porch area.

There were rows and rows of plants and shelves to mask her presence, and there quite a few guards to uncover it. Okay. She just . . . had to look at this like it was a maze. How did one kill silently? This was Vanille's kind of game, not hers . . . Kallisti took a deep, deep breath and moved through the rows of plants, and then found herself against one of the glass walls. Glass. Dammit.

She looked behind her to check if anyone was outside and . . . The trucks! Ah, yes, they were still there! She gave this moment to feel exhilarated and happy, and then checked herself and became slightly panicked again. How was she going to get out there, though? Guards were at the doors of the green house/porch . . . After sitting on the thought for a few minutes, she pulled out an arrow and poked herself with the tip. These arrows were probably the best she had ever seen, since they had been made at Antilum.

Could slice through anything like butter . . .

Kallisti looked at the glass for a long moment and then shrugged. Checking over her shoulder once more, she decided this was worth a shot. It took a long time, and she was almost caught more than once, but eventually, she was able to cut a large square out of glass and move through it. Almost home free . . .

And then she stepped on the glass. And it cracked. Loudly.

    Fuck.

    " Hey, what's over - HEY! "

    ohshitohshitohshitohshitohshitohshit

She got to her feet as fast as she could and started running. There had been a fifteen second head start before the guns started going off. She ran faster than she ever had in her entire life, the trucks getting closer with every panicked breath. One bullet grazed her arm. Another, her her leg. Her cheek. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

After eternity passed, Kallisti reached the truck, in pain, covered in her own blood, snatched the keys out of her bra, opened the door and got in, gasping for life. There was tons of yelling and gun shooting, and . . . Was that an alarm? Where did that even come from?

Her body ached, her muscles throbbed, she gasped for breath . . . But she was still alive. Somehow. And bleeding. Sort of . . . badly. There was no time. She turned on the truck, wildly pulled out and sped around the estate, heading for the moor. Slowly, all of the adrenaline drained away, and her gasps turned into nearly uncontrollable sobs. This was terrible. Terrible. SO TERRIBLE. She needed someone. ANYONE. WHERE WAS KAL? Oh god, she couldn't stop crying.

Years seemed to go by, but she finally reached an old wooden building that was the main feature of the moor. Her sobs had died down into sniffles, and she continued to bleed.

" Kallisti! " Harley said with some relief as she stumbled out of the truck, " Fucking hell, you look terrible. Shit, you're bleeding . . . " Another round of crying started as Kallisti hugged Harley tightly, forgetting everything for just one moment.

" Quin! " Vanille said, appearing from seemingly nowhere, and then she opened a door in the ground, " Quin's here, we gotta move the stuff into the truck! " And so it was done, and with bandages that were pulled out from supplies, all of Kallsiti's wounds were wrapped up.

" Alright guys, we're heading out for the house in the mountains. " Harley said.

" It's an hour's drive from here to there, so hang tight! " Vanille added, hopping into the seat next to Harley.

As she sat in the back of the truck, quietly sobbing as everyone else was getting ready to go, she couldn't help but think of Marina, and whether or not her legs were broken.

Well, this situation was just looking all kinds of bad, wasn't it?

Vanille listened thoughtfully to Tempy's tale of the magical airship. Did such a thing really exist? She wondered what the magic words were? Not that it would really do them any good; Cresty would probably bring it down!

Her hand went up to the makeshift bandage on her arm, the thick cloth slowly becoming soaked with her blood. At least the flow hadn't been very fast to begin with, but she couldn't believe that she had gotten it in the first place! Careless, careless!

Casey motioned to the pathway; he said it would lead them to the moor. She didn't like boats - there was no way she was getting on one, but there was probably something else there waiting for them! If Quin didn't mess up, hopefully she would have a truck there when they arrived.

Well, what are we waiting for? she asked, still asking her arm, We should get moving! If they were lucky, they could definitely make it to the hideout in the mountains . . .

Casey, lead the way, I don't think we have much time!

She really hoped she was wrong about that . . .

Kallisti was now standing in the cellar, waiting for Harley to finish his Romeo-show with Marina. She was tired, but at least she was away from the rest of them. The situation was starting to look slightly hopeful. The door to the cellar, up the stairs, had been kicked in, but now there was nothing but silence and she was the only person currently occupying the damp room.

What had happened to Cherno, she wondered? It might happen to her, too. She didn't exactly plan this move all the way through, but she needed to be useful, as far as she was concerned. Being decent with a bow was her only useful skill in the entire situation. She needed to do more. So she was going on a suicide mission.

" Kallisti, I could care less if you do not care about me, and I am not doing this to be heroic. It is my fault that bag lady arrived and started bombing and I wish to complete what I started nearly a week ago. I want to find her and to do that, I am going to walk over there and get arrested. "

But Kallisti barley heard a word of it. There were steps moving around up the stairs. Marina continued anyway, " If you wait long enough, I can probably cause enough of a distraction to let you slip out unnoticed. "

She gently stuck her hand over Marina's mouth to get her to stop talking while the footsteps continued. This was going to be a stress, wasn't it? Her finger went to her lips, and she pulled out her bow and nocked an arrow. Against the cool cellar stone, her feet moved and then she took the first step up the wooden steps. A nearly inaudible creak sounded and she cringed; it was just loud enough for them to be caught.

" There are still here, " she whispered, going up a few more steps and then stopping, " A straggler from the company that had come to retrieve us is near, I think. Wait for my signal to follow . . . " Dear god, she had no idea if she was doing this right or not, but nerve-destroying minutes later, she reached the top and peered around the corner. No one in sight. Where were all of the foot steps coming from?

She was able to see the kitchen from where she stood in the shadows, a few soldiers were in there, and she quickly came down the steps again, glancing at Marina in a slight panic. She had hoped that they were gone by now, but she should have known better. There were definitely less of them - maybe they would give up soon? Surely they had scoured the entirety of the cellar, already.

" Hey! " came a rough male voice in a whisper, and Kallisti froze. Someone was looking directly at her, but they didn't look happy to see her at all, " What are you still doing here? I thought Master Casey got you all out! " He wasn't talking very loudly, which she was glad for. He moved closer to the cellar door, and she went down a few steps, " You need to get out of here, girl! "

" I need the keys to the two supply trucks that we brought here. Do you know where they are? " she asked urgently. Oh, no - they hadn't been raided by the soldiers, had they?

The servant seemed contemplative, " They're in the kitchen, need 'em? " This was . . . too easy, she thought to herself. " Look girl, I can only do so much for you. "

She bit her lip, " Get them for me. " she commanded, much harsher than she intended. Oh, god, what if he told them she was here? He casually walked off and she watched him disappear into the kitchen. The soldiers immediately questioned his actions, but she listened to him make some lie about . . . storage rooms upstairs? Maybe downstairs.

Ten minutes later, the servant came back to her, but passed the cellar door. Kallisti almost made the mistake of reaching out from the shadows to grab him, but then two heavily armed personnel passed the door, too. She gasped, took a misstep backwards, and nearly fell down. Five more minutes, and the servant returned, holding his hand into the darkness as conspicuously as he could.

Rougher than she meant to, she snatched the keys from him and padded down the stairs, back to Marina. " I need to get to the moor, out back with one of the trucks. You said you would provide distraction, yes? " she asked, jingling the keys nervously, " Please, Marina, be careful. I know it seems ironic, but . . . this is dangerous. Whenever you are ready, we will move. "

Kallisti had been paying attention to the gash on Vanille's arm that she had gotten when they all rushed down to the cellar. It didn't look to bad, but none of them had decent bandages - there was a good chance it could get infected.

He sighed. The Heckles Estate had been a setup, and by the look of it, Casey knew nothing about it? Selfish fucking servants. How the hell were they going to get out of here now? They had none of their supplies, and there was no way they could stay down here. His mind had skimmed through Temperance's presence and outburst about Cherno. Harley felt bad for the guy, no doubt, but there was nothing they could do now without all of them getting caught.

" Worthless . . . " Casey uttered brokenly, " I'm so . . . worthless. " Dammit, don't tell him that the kid was crying? Now wasn't the time for crying. They had to get out of here. Casey could wallow in self-pity later, when they were safer. Harley could imagine how the kid was feeling, but now wasn't the damn time.

Marina had left his arms and tried to soothe Casey while he remained silent, contemplating their options. While she was talking to him, Kallisti leaned over and whispered in his ear. His eyebrows raised and he looked at her, firmly shaking his head as she stood up and motioned to Vanille's arm that was wrapped up, but still bleeding. He shook his head again and the two began to quietly argue over what was going to be done, and then she pinched him.

" Ow! " he hissed, and swatted her hand away. She put her hands to her hips and he sighed heavily, " Fine. "

" I am going out there. " Harley wrenched his neck around to stare at Marina. Was she serious? Goddamn these women. He glanced back at Kallisti and her face was contorted into a frown. She didn't want Marina to go, not to the same destination - which was outside.

Goddammit. He didn't wan't either of them to leave. Kallisti because . . . Well, he'd rather keep that to himself, but Marina . . . That woman. She was ridiculous, and he hated her because of who she was, because of what she said. How she said it. How she made him feel. Goddamn this, and everything else.

" Someone please help me move it so that I may leave. " she asked.

" I am going as well. " Kallisti said, moving towards the barrel, " Your heroism act does not please me, and I am not accompanying you because I give the slightest shit about you - " Wow, that was not like her, " - but I have my own reasons. Our paths may diverge, so do not expect me to be watching your back the entire time. " She moved the barrel that revealed the hole and motioned for Marina to follow her through it.

" Kallisti . . . " Harley said, and she looked pointedly at him, " Be careful. " She nodded solemnly and climbed through, " Marina. " he said, standing up and moving towards her, " Might be the last time we see each other. " he commented, grabbing her shoulders, leaning down, and pressing his lips against hers, " I hate this, feeling for you. Not just because it puts me in danger, but because it gives me more to lose. "

He sighed, leaning his forehead against hers, " I hate you, a lot, but don't feel bad . . . I hate everyone who makes me care. Be careful. Kallisti'll watch you until she finds her own goal. I know she doesn't seem like it, but she will stay with you for as long as she can manage. "

With a heavy feeling, Harley let her go and turned his back on her, looking at the rest of their shrunken party. There wasn't much to work with on personnel, but he'd manage. Marina had said he was a leader, after all. " As for the rest of us . . . Casey, is there another way out of here? C'mon kid, pull yourself together, we don't have time for emotions. " Well, that was a hypocritical statement, but fuck it, " We need to get to one of the trucks and move sanctuaries. "

When the voices sounded, Harley didn't move, no one else did. And then Casey yelled, and Harley swept up Marina, Vanille grabbed hold of Kallisti, and they hightailed it down to the cellar.

Harley had no idea what had gone on, but there had been lots of yelling, and a gunshot, "Casey, what the hell is going on?" he shouted as he jet down the stairs with Marina close to his chest in his arms.

    - - -

Kallisti's hand was yanked violently by Vanille and she had no idea what was going on, and all she could think about was following after Harley who had, for some reason, grabbed Marina. Her mind was in a blur, but she didn't have to focus much with the smaller girl leading her down the cellar.

" Vanille, be careful! " she said when the girl tripped and nearly collapsed onto Harley.

" I - I cut myself! " Vanille said back to her, and then cursed under her breath as they reached the floor of the cellar. " I need bandages . . . "

When Madam Lumia had announced that the next act was Anya Kurse, Nix had left all other things from his attention and focused on the stage. Anya was not the artsy type, and Nix knew that, so the fact that she'd quickly and willingly gone up to the state meant - to him - that something interesting was about to take place.

    And it did.

A smile spread over his face as he watched her obviously-rebellious performance, and he was almost jealous that he wasn't the un-subtle type, the person to split the reality like that, to make such a large, bold statement. It was pretty great. And then she collapsed. Nix watched as the crowd parted by an invisible force and guessed that it was little Ghostie going up to the stage.

Before he could make any other movements, heavy steps entered the room and looked at the doorway. The lights had come on and there were four school security agents standing at the door, making quite an entrance. One of them pulled out a list, and Nix had a feeling he knew what was on it.

"Dean, Holson, Kurse, Logan, Moon, and White; you are sentenced to the white room by orders of your headmaster."

Nix didn't move and looked to the other students who were now at least making a two-feet-in-diameter circle around him. Despite his normally cool demeanor, Nix didn't think he could go to the White Room - and if he knew better ( which he did ), they weren't just going to the White Room. They'd broken at least ten school rules, and the biggest one of all that was probably going to have their asses.

Just then, the Littlest Shrimp took a run for the stage and created a wall of electricity that no security was going to get through, but the Rendium they had with them might. He considered his options; he could go with the guards and suffer a lesser punishment than those rebelling at the moment, he could tell the guards to suck his dick and not move from his spot, he could go behind the wall of electricity with the girls, or . . .

Nix looked up at the ceiling. The very center of it was made of glass, and . . . He grinned, but this was pretty dangerous.

"Hunter, think fast." he whispered, thrusting forth his hand and shooting a ball of ice at one of the guns the guards held. What did ice do to Rendium? He didn't know, come to think about it, but the gun froze over, and then the guard yelped and dropped it. One of the other guns was aimed at him, and then it shot. He took a breath and jumped out of the way, students yelping and screaming, not wanting to be hit with the weakening substance.

Nix didn't take off as fast as he wanted to, but with a good, strong kick, he was up in the air, the room being barely big enough to house his free spirit. Another bullet of Rendium shot at him and he almost fell out of the air, causing students to panic, and him to feel his stomach drop, but he focused all of his energy into staying up and then shot through the ceiling window, the glass shattering against his head and cutting him in a few places.

A few minutes later, he landed on the roof of the school, collapsing against one of the walls, panting heavily. Damn that Rendium . . . He just hoped he was able to rest long enough to get away from this part of the school.

Vanille found herself back in the kitchen, helping out the servants again after talking to Kallisti. She really, honestly wouldn't have minded her taking the truck to find her beloved, but that was just supplies that they really needed, and couldn't go to waste!

❝Vanille, good morning.❞ She looked to the opening of the kitchen to see a very sickly-looking Marina. It was really tood bad about her! Maybe not . . . She shrugged, "I do not suppose you could help me with some food? I have not had a single thing to eat in days.❞

Sure! she piped cheerfully, and then began fixing Marina a generous plate, watching the servant named Jackson after he had come in. There was something really off about that guy, and she didn't like it. Here you go, Marina! she said after helping the girl to a chair at a counter, and then pouring her a glass of orange juice, You might want to drink that medicine you have, it might make you better ~

Good morning, Jackson! she said, dancing around him, peering through her eerie iron mask, I hope you've had a good morning. And then she danced away to help other servants.

Kallisti looked up at the sign that Harley had taped to the wall. Were they really going to move tonight? What would happen to Madeline, and those others? She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Perhaps it would be better for her to face reality; they might be dead. They probably were dead.

The realization hurt a little less than she thought it would, but still hurt nonetheless. She didn't ask for this; didn't ask to grow feelings for a girl like Madeline - for Madeline.

Her fingers trailed over the bandages that covered her arm. She felt sick, so she decided to sit down. The others would have to be up soon. they were going to move. She found that she couldn't sit for long, so she went out back, to the trucks. Everything seemed fine there. What was she doing . . . Just finding things to keep her busy.

Her eyes flashed in the direction of where they came. She could do it. She could take one of the trucks, and go back.

" Hi, Quin! " said a happy voice, and Kallisti jumped at its sudden appearance. She spun around to see that Vanille was sitting on top of one of the trucks, and halfheartedly waved, " What'cha doin'? "

She sighed in defeat, " Nothing. I was just checking our supplies . . . "

" Mmmmmmhm, " the smaller girl hummed knowingly, " You were thinking about taking one, weren't'cha? "

Kallisti glared at her, turned away, and walked back into the house. She sighed, slightly glad that Vanille had stopped her. Would she really go out there, all alone, to try and find people who might already be dead? It was a ridiculous notion, and she was almost ashamed of nearly letting her emotions control her.

    She choked back a sob.

Harley didn't remember going to sleep last night, but he woke up next to the couch where Marina slept. He gave a once over to her face, wishing they could have talked more. Despite her condition, she was probably still one of the most beautiful people he had ever met. It seemed that, the whole night, their fingers hand been intertwined with one and other.

He let her hand go and left her side, travelling to the kitchen, hearing knives, steam, and cooking. Servants were working in the kitchen, and then there was Vanille, scooting along, helping who she could.

" Good Morning, Harley! " she popped, slicing up ham with ease, " I told them about the house in the mountains. I think it would be a really good idea to go there! "

Oh. That house, where he had met Lilith. Was she dead, again? Naw, Lilith was smarter than that, more cunning than that - she'd be able to stay out of the eye of Lorinda all that time, hadn't she?

" You're right. " he told her, " Think we should just go, or tell everyone else? "

" Harleeeey, dummy, we can't just leave them here! " He thought about the frail Marina on the couch; did he really want to see her die? There, he was being selfish and he knew it, " Um . . . Harley? Your nose is bleeding. " she said carefully, holding out a napkin. Bleeding nose? Ah, damn. Before she gave it to him, she ran it under cool water, and then he held it to his nose to make the blood flow stop.

Well, at least he wasn't coughing it up, but he had a feeling that he would be soon.

" We'll need to move, soon. Have you checked the trucks for the status of our supplies? " he asked her, holding the cool, becoming-stained napkin to one of his nostrils.

She nodded, absentmindedly playing with a small blade in her hand, " Stopping by here helped a lot too, we'll be able to be on the road for at least a week before we start getting low. "

He thought of the amount of time that it took to get to the large house in the mountains. A few hours at most? They would need capable drivers; he'd be one of them, and . . . Cherno drove the last truck, didn't he? It was settled then. They would have to head out by the end of the day.

Harley asked one of the servants for paper and a red sharpie, then scribbled on writing and stuck it on a wall near the entrance to the kitchen where it'd be most seen. " WE SHOULD MOVE LOCATIONS SOON. THERE IS A HOUSE IN THE MOUNTAINS WHERE WE WILL BE MOVING TO. "

With a sigh, he slipped the marker onto the counter and began checking around for other people that were up.
