The only one that ever really confused me was "Mar-lux-ia" actually being "Mar-loosh-a".
We never fought Xemnas in KH1, that was Xehanort's Heartless. And besides, Square is a Japanese company, it's only logical that they release their games in Japanese first.
Go for X & X-2 for a great story to start out with. Other I recommend are XII, VIII, IV, and XII for DS called Revenant Wings.
