As far as the book of Revelations was considered any mention of Satan was an allegorical reference to Nero and his oppression of Christians. The entire section was designed to be a criticism of the Roman Empire disguised as scripture so as not to insight a complete genocide while spreading the word. The number itself really has no meaning except that it's the numerological total of the sounds in Nero's name. From there those that took it literal developed distortions of the books' symbolism.
