well when you joker to appear in rooms you mut hold R2 before you enetr and after you've appeared in the new room
keep holding R2 till you appear in the area
first off yes they all work, i've used them several times you fall but i think they all have infinite jump equiped in them, so when you start to fall just keep pressing circle
