I have a theory that might make sense. In kakashi Gaiden, Obito disagrees with not saving Rin. This leads to the two splitting up. Kakashi later has a change of heart and decides to go help. Kakashi later gets his eye damaged, gets Obito's eye, leaves Obito behind, feels responsible for killing Obito, and unknowingly unlocks the mangekyo at that time. Later, after seeing Itachi use his he becomes aware of the advanced Sharingan, and either trains hard to wield it or asks Sasuke about it.
I can't wait till this starts.
