I'm trying to think of ways to help identify people who change names frequently. Working under the assumption that the username history field will remain as it is (which is probably for the best, especially for people like me who've been b& before and had to restart), I thought of this idea. Basically a field where you list what people typically call you or what you'd like to be called.

The way this would differ from username history is that the latter serves purely informative purposes, while the former can also be a convenience for the user, thus there is a different incentive to use it—not necessarily a better incentive, but one that may appeal to more people and thus see more widespread use.

And when I say children, I mean at or under 13. Have you ever tried it? Do you have any references, quotes, or guidelines that you live by in the effort?

When I think of children, I think of slightly simpler adults. Smaller vocabulary, less articulate, but otherwise mostly the same; after all, kids emulate adults because they think we're cool. No matter how dreamy or carefree the child, in all likelihood there's a version of that some fifteen years older which can be used to inspire the character.

It's called The Chaos, by Gerard Nolst Trenité, and it's a BEAST. Really shows how nutty the language can be.

NOTE TO THOSE STILL LEARNING ENGLISH: This is an awful way to learn, so take it with a grain of salt. Many of the words are archaic and not all of them still rhyme in American English. It's mostly a bonus exercise for those who feel themselves fluent already.

    Dearest creature in creation
    Studying English pronunciation,

I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse and worse.
I will keep you, Susy, busy,
    Make your head with heat grow dizzy;

    Tear in eye, your dress you'll tear;
Queer, fair seer, hear my prayer.
    Pray, console your loving poet,
Make my coat look new, dear, sew it!

Just compare heart, hear and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word.
Sword and sward, retain and Britain
(Mind the latter how it's written).

Made has not the sound of bade,
    Say-said, pay-paid, laid but plaid.
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as vague and ague,

But be careful how you speak,
Say: gush, bush, steak, streak, break, bleak,
    Previous, precious, fuchsia, via
    Recipe, pipe, studding-sail, choir;

    Woven, oven, how and low,
    Script, receipt, shoe, poem, toe.
    Say, expecting fraud and trickery:
    Daughter, laughter and Terpsichore,

    Branch, ranch, measles, topsails, aisles,
    Missiles, similes, reviles.
    Wholly, holly, signal, signing,
    Same, examining, but mining,

    Scholar, vicar, and cigar,
    Solar, mica, war and far.
    From "desire," desirable-admirable from "admire,"
    Lumber, plumber, bier, but brier,

    Topsham, brougham, renown, but known,
Knowledge, done, lone, gone, none, tone,
    One, anemone, Balmoral,
    Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel.

    Gertrude, German, wind and wind,
    Beau, kind, kindred, queue, mankind,
    Tortoise, turquoise, chamois-leather,
    Reading, Reading, heathen, heather.

    This phonetic labyrinth
Gives moss, gross, brook, brooch, ninth, plinth.
    Have you ever yet endeavoured
    To pronounce revered and severed,

    Demon, lemon, ghoul, foul, soul,
    Peter, petrol and patrol?
    Billet does not end like ballet;
    Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.

Blood and flood are not like food,
Nor is mould like should and would.
    Banquet is not nearly parquet,
    Which exactly rhymes with khaki.

    Discount, viscount, load and broad,
    Toward, to forward, to reward,
    Ricocheted and crocheting, croquet?
    Right! Your pronunciation's OK.

    Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve,
Friend and fiend, alive and live.
Is your R correct in higher?
Keats asserts it rhymes with Thalia.

Hugh, but hug, and hood, but hoot,
    Buoyant, minute, but minute.
    Say abscission with precision,
    Now: position and transition;

Would it tally with my rhyme
    If I mentioned paradigm?
    Twopence, threepence, tease are easy,
But cease, crease, grease and greasy?

    Cornice, nice, valise, revise,
    Rabies, but lullabies.
Of such puzzling words as nauseous,
    Rhyming well with cautious, tortious,

    You'll envelop lists, I hope,
    In a linen envelope.
Would you like some more? You'll have it!
    Affidavit, David, davit.

    To abjure, to perjure. Sheik
Does not sound like Czech but ache.
    Liberty, library, heave and heaven,
    Rachel, loch, moustache, eleven.

    We say hallowed, but allowed,
    People, leopard, towed but vowed.
    Mark the difference, moreover,
    Between mover, plover, Dover.

    Leeches, breeches, wise, precise,
    Chalice, but police and lice,
    Camel, constable, unstable,
    Principle, disciple, label.

    Petal, penal, and canal,
    Wait, surmise, plait, promise, pal,
    Suit, suite, ruin. Circuit, conduit
Rhyme with "shirk it" and "beyond it",

But it is not hard to tell
Why it's pall, mall, but Pall Mall.
    Muscle, muscular, gaol, iron,
    Timber, climber, bullion, lion,

Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair,
    Senator, spectator, mayor,
    Ivy, privy, famous; clamour
Has the A of drachm and hammer.

    Pussy, hussy and possess,
    Desert, but desert, address.
    Golf, wolf, countenance, lieutenants
Hoist in lieu of flags left pennants.

    Courier, courtier, tomb, bomb, comb,
Cow, but Cowper, some and home.
    "Solder, soldier! Blood is thicker,"
Quoth he, "than liqueur or liquor,"

Making, it is sad but true,
    In bravado, much ado.
Stranger does not rhyme with anger,
    Neither does devour with clangour.

    Pilot, pivot, gaunt, but aunt,
Font, front, wont, want, grand and grant.
    Arsenic, specific, scenic,
    Relic, rhetoric, hygienic.

Gooseberry, goose, and close, but close,
    Paradise, rise, rose, and dose.
    Say inveigh, neigh, but inveigle,
Make the latter rhyme with eagle.

    Mind! Meandering but mean,
    Valentine and magazine.
And I bet you, dear, a penny,
    You say mani-(fold) like many,

Which is wrong. Say rapier, pier,
Tier (one who ties), but tier.
    Arch, archangel; pray, does erring
Rhyme with herring or with stirring?

    Prison, bison, treasure trove,
    Treason, hover, cover, cove,
    Perseverance, severance. Ribald
Rhymes (but piebald doesn't) with nibbled.

    Phaeton, paean, gnat, ghat, gnaw,
    Lien, psychic, shone, bone, pshaw.
Don't be down, my own, but rough it,
    And distinguish buffet, buffet;

Brood, stood, roof, rook, school, wool, boon,
    Worcester, Boleyn, to impugn.
Say in sounds correct and sterling
Hearse, hear, hearken, year and yearling.

    Evil, devil, mezzotint,
Mind the Z! (A gentle hint.)
Now you need not pay attention
To such sounds as I don't mention,

Sounds like pores, pause, pours and paws,
    Rhyming with the pronoun yours;
    Nor are proper names included,
Though I often heard, as you did,

    Funny rhymes to unicorn,
Yes, you know them, Vaughan and Strachan.
No, my maiden, coy and comely,
I don't want to speak of Cholmondeley.

No. Yet Froude compared with proud
    Is no better than McLeod.
    But mind trivial and vial,
    Tripod, menial, denial,

Troll and trolley, realm and ream,
    Schedule, mischief, schism, and scheme.
    Argil, gill, Argyll, gill. Surely
May be made to rhyme with Raleigh,

But you're not supposed to say
    Piquet rhymes with sobriquet.
    Had this invalid invalid
    Worthless documents? How pallid,

    How uncouth he, couchant, looked,
When for Portsmouth I had booked!
    Zeus, Thebes, Thales, Aphrodite,
    Paramour, enamoured, flighty,

    Episodes, antipodes,
    Acquiesce, and obsequies.
Please don't monkey with the geyser,
Don't peel 'taters with my razor,

    Rather say in accents pure:
    Nature, stature and mature.
    Pious, impious, limb, climb, glumly,
    Worsted, worsted, crumbly, dumbly,

    Conquer, conquest, vase, phase, fan,
    Wan, sedan and artisan.
The TH will surely trouble you
More than R, CH or W.

    Say then these phonetic gems:
    Thomas, thyme, Theresa, Thames.
    Thompson, Chatham, Waltham, Streatham,
There are more but I forget 'em-

    Wait! I've got it: Anthony,
    Lighten your anxiety.
    The archaic word albeit
    Does not rhyme with eightyou see it;

With and forthwith, one has voice,
One has not, you make your choice.
    Shoes, goes, does. Now first say: finger;
    Then say: singer, ginger, linger.

Real, zeal, mauve, gauze and gauge,
    Marriage, foliage, mirage, age,
    Hero, heron, query, very,
    Parry, tarry fury, bury,

Dost, lost, post, and doth, cloth, loth,
    Job, Job, blossom, bosom, oath.
    Faugh, oppugnant, keen oppugners,
    Bowing, bowing, banjo-tuners

Holm you know, but noes, canoes,
    Puisne, truism, use, to use?
    Though the difference seems little,
    We say actual, but victual,

Seat, sweat, chaste, caste, Leigh, eight, height,
    Put, nut, granite, and unite.
Reefer does not rhyme with deafer,
    Feoffer does, and zephyr, heifer.

Dull, bull, Geoffrey, George, ate, late,
    Hint, pint, senate, but sedate.
    Gaelic, Arabic, pacific,
    Science, conscience, scientific;

Tour, but our, dour, succour, four,
    Gas, alas, and Arkansas.
    Say manoeuvre, yacht and vomit,
Next omit, which differs from it
    Bona fide, alibi
    Gyrate, dowry and awry.

    Sea, idea, guinea, area,
    Psalm, Maria, but malaria.
Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean,
    Doctrine, turpentine, marine.

    Compare alien with Italian,
    Dandelion with battalion,

    Rally with ally; ye, yea,
Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, key, quay!
    Say aver, but ever, fever,
    Neither, leisure, skein, receiver.

    Never guessit is not safe,
We say calves, valves, half, but Ralf.
    Starry, granary, canary,
    Crevice, but device, and eyrie,

    Face, but preface, then grimace,
    Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Bass, large, target, gin, give, verging,
    Ought, oust, joust, and scour, but scourging;

Ear, but earn; and ere and tear
Do not rhyme with here but heir.
Mind the O of off and often
Which may be pronounced as orphan,

    With the sound of saw and sauce;
Also soft, lost, cloth and cross.
    Pudding, puddle, putting. Putting?
Yes: at golf it rhymes with shutting.

    Respite, spite, consent, resent.
    Liable, but Parliament.
Seven is right, but so is even,
    Hyphen, roughen, nephew, Stephen,

    Monkey, donkey, clerk and jerk,

    A of valour, vapid vapour,
    S of news (compare newspaper),

    G of gibbet, gibbon, gist,
    I of antichrist and grist,
    Differ like diverse and divers,
    Rivers, strivers, shivers, fivers.

Once, but nonce, toll, doll, but roll,
    Polish, Polish, poll and poll.
    Pronunciationthink of Psyche!—
Is a paling, stout and spiky.

Won't it make you lose your wits
    Writing groats and saying "grits?"
It's a dark abyss or tunnel
Strewn with stones like rowlock, gunwale,

    Islington, and Isle of Wight,
    Housewife, verdict and indict.
Don't you think so, reader, rather,
    Saying lather, bather, father?

    Finally, which rhymes with enough,
Though, through, bough, cough, hough, sough, tough??
Hiccough has the sound of cup...
My advice is: GIVE IT UP!

...And that was definitely not worth copying and formatting. JESUS.

Some of you may have seen this coming, what with my now-more-evident-than-ever penchant for provocative avatars. I would hope I don't need to add this disclaimer, but be aware that sexytalks will take place herein, so if you're not all about discussing the carnal arts then this may not be the thread for you. By the same token, don't get too graphic—You can easily talk about the thing without describing it in acute detail.

I think I have a somewhat controversial view on this, given select past events which I won't get too deep into, but I've often wanted to write stories that would be out-and-out pornographic if not for a slightly more balanced sex-to-plot ratio. One such idea is to write of a modern-day coven of wicca who specialize in sex magick, and use it to explore concepts of physical and emotional intimacy, control dynamics in relationships, sexual deviance and taboos and the mindsets of those who lean towards them. Not only do I want to write these things but I want to see more of them—not strictly for the purpose of, ahem... gratifying oneself physically, but not ignoring it either—rather, using it as a tool in the writing process.

There's a webcomic I like called Three Years. It's a Homestuck fanwork. I'll spare you their life stories, but it's about two kids taking an extended road trip through the null space between universes—not entirely alone, but mostly—who begin to develop feelings for each other. The catch is that they recently found out they're brother and sister. There was a promise of exponentially saucier scenes, though it seems to have been discontinued before anything spectacular happened. Anyway, it's a really cute and gut-wrenching story about two kids who fell in love under faulty pretenses and now have to wrestle with the emotional hurricane that creates, and without the visceral sexual details I feel as if the story would be deprived of so much impact. You have to feel right along with them the closeness and anticipation, the heat and intenseness as they draw closer, and the palpable void between them when one breaks away and mumbles "This is so wrong."

Immersion is a natural part of storytelling. You want the observer to feel the emotions your characters feel, to relate to them and empathize. Why then would we ignore aspects such as attraction and arousal? I feel certain stories can only or best be told through those sensations, not only because of their power but because of the myriad of situations to which they apply in our daily lives. They have the power to break down barriers, same as any other emotion. Not to mention, well-written tales of sex and sexual situations, where those involved practice it responsibly (or, if not, faced with consequences for their abandon), might help curb the tide of ill-informed kids and teenagers losing their future and livelihood to sex.

So, opinions? Struck a chord, or do I just look like a creep up here on my soapbox?

I wanna talk about this because it excites me and I want to spread awareness of Steam alternatives (lest anyone mistake me for a fanboy).

Some of you may have heard of sites like Good Old Games and Humble Bundle when they were first getting started. Old PC games in digital format for cheap with no strings attached? Sounds great! Patronage system that saves most people a couple hundred bucks and benefits charity? What's not to like!

Did you know GOG sells new games too? Did you know Humble Bundle has a store, and is dedicated to a multiplatform offerings, including DRM-free copies of any game that has them?

Now, this is the part where I stop sounding like an advert. Concept of ownership is a subject that has been touched on a few times in digital history, mostly in other media; arguably, it didn't seriously enter into gamers' minds until Microsoft's many stumbling blocks with the Xbox One. But it is a question that has been raised about Steam, the until-recently unchallenged PC gaming titan; with the threat of losing all your games for being reported in one looming large over its consumer base, people began to wonder: Is it worth paying for something that can be taken away so easily?

Now, I have a feeling we could go on for at least five pages debating that one question. But more to the point, I doubt anyone will disagree that more freedom of choice doesn't go amiss. GOG and Humble seized on this unintentionally at first, I think, but then it just sort of clicked in everyone's heads: We don't have to go through publishers anymore. We have the internet! We can sell something all on our own, spread the word virally, and potentially make a killing at that.

This brings us to today, where digital ownership is not just a gimmick that keeps a few fringe webstores afloat—It is a real and common choice when buying a game. Not as common on the triple-A side of things, but they also don't make up the same vast majority of the market they used to. I think I've bought somewhere around 20 games in the past two months, and of that only a fraction of them weren't available for download directly to my PC. As long as I keep them backed up and take good care of my computer, I'll always have those games; nobody can take them away by right or contract. That's exciting if you ask me.

So what do y'all think? Is it the best thing to happen to gaming? Is it a temporary paradise, soon to be quashed by our console/Valve overlords? Is there some other downside to all of this?

This can be genres, individual game mechanics, plots, anything. Please be kind to those expressing their opinions and try not to start fights—Some of y'all might think I'm a fan of the echo chamber but negative expression does have its place and does deserve respect (long as it's polite).

For me, anything that allows you to make realtime decisions, but applies them in a turn-based fashion (Most MMOs, FFXII, many strategy games) is usually right out. Turn-based I like, realtime I like, but that in-between is just agonizing and imo serves no purpose beyond the developer's convenience. I'd rather the game not be made than be forced to play like that.

The other thing that bugs me is the isometric point of view seen in a lot of western action-RPGs (not to mention most of the "faketime" games mentioned above). I cannot imagine a viewpoint less immersive or removed from the action; literally anything would be better. Even first-person, which I traditionally don't go for. Typically games featuring this angle also come with a locked camera to boot, which only serves to take me farther out of the experience. I've tried Bastion, Torchlight II, League of Legends, the works; the only isometric-view game I can think of that I genuinely liked was the recent Wonderful 101, and not only does it have a much better reason (imo) to use that viewpoint, not only does it have segments that aren't isometric, BUT it also allows you to adjust the zoom and angle.

I wanna know what each color represents to you. What imagery it brings to mind. Do light greens remind you of spring? Is purple a color that inspires you to draw? Do you feel unnerved when you see deep amber or blood-red eyes? If combinations of colors have special significance to you (such as complements or holiday colors) then feel free to share that as well.

Orange, because of its link to fire, symbolizes energy and drive to me; bright oranges make an image more vivid and lively. Which is strange, since they can also mean the opposite, as in sunsets or autumn leaves which bring to mind images of passing, ending, or winding down.

I also see magenta as a sort of spiritual color, for various reasons. One being that (aside from red, obviously) it's a color commonly used to represent the heart, usually in a metaphorical rather than literal sense.

I got to thinking about this after reading this article and following the train of thought to my own frequent avatar switching. The gist of the article is that men play as women fairly often (at least compared to the reverse) in online games, with some interesting results...
So in other words, a form of role-playing, perhaps subconscious. Not perfect, as the article goes on to say—Surface details changed, but more ambiguous or firmly rooted habits stayed constant—but interesting nonetheless.

I began to think about this in the context of avatars, the masks we wear, and realized they might have some things in common. My last avatar of consequence as of writing was this one, and while bearing it I became contemptuous and snide towards certain people, prodding them and then laughing at their reaction; meanwhile, my current one as of writing is this, and I've already begun to write more neutral, open, or vulnerable posts as a result. Two just tonight. Obviously I could still open up with the former or be incited to anger with the latter, but even then my responses tend to be filtered, e.g. I might confess something in an aloof or detached way, or express my anger as though flustered or on the verge of tears.

Now, I'll be the first to admit I'm a performer—such a good one in fact that I find it hard to keep track of what's sincere and what's an act—but I also doubt that nobody else in the world does this. So what do you think? Does this happen to you? Do you change your avatar to suit your mood... or do you find the opposite happening, that your mask of choice changes the expression you wear underneath? Do you place significance on your avatars, or just wear the characters you enjoy (or both)?

Is culture a word that holds any weight to you? What images does it bring to mind? Do you think of countries or peoples? Or do you think of social groups, people who come together to find common ground? What does culture do for you—or, if you feel you have none, what would you want from it?

When I think of culture, I think of tradition and heritage. Belief systems, musical styles, rituals, parables, even sayings and day-to-day superstitions, that accumulate over time and many generations. Things that give people a sense of family and unity. And I feel like I'm lacking in that. My relationship with my family is all right, but it's not spectacular. And I never felt like I had a whole lot in common with people. My folks and I moved around a bit, and I was always transferring between schools, leaving whole social groups behind. I was missing something to keep me grounded. I've sort of found it on the net, but not to a huge extent; even here, sometimes I still feel like a stranger. But I will say this: There are people I've met here who I feel would never judge me harshly, would always try to find common ground and make me feel like I belong, and that means a lot.

I know next-to-nothing about my distant family. Kinda sad really :'D But I was wondering if anyone else on the boards ever thought about it or bothered to learn more about where they came from. Or have you known loads about your ancestry since you were little?

This can be anything as recent as your great-grandparents or as far off as the first of your family to immigrate to your home country. Whatever's significant to you.

We've all bickered for hours over which Disney worlds are gonna make the cut, but has anyone thought about which KH-exclusive worlds are gonna make a comeback? Any guesses on which parts of those worlds will make a return, or whether we'll get to see new areas (as with Traverse Town in KH3D)?

I for one would like to see every original world make an appearance... with the possible exception of Traverse Town, since it's questionable if it's actually still there or not. Castle Oblivion has an excuse to be there. Radiant Garden is a pretty safe bet, and I'll accept any excuse to return to Hollow Bastion proper. We've already seen Twilight Town, so we know that's in... I'd be interested to see The World that Never Was, simply because it's never been in a game where it wasn't one of the most important locales and it'd be kinda cool to just run around explorin' stuff. Will the Destiny Islands be playable, or just a set piece for the credits sequence? Who knows.

The key devices here are my laptop and my PS3, both with which I've had several problems.

I live on the second floor of my folks' house. I'm about as far away as possible from the router, which is something I've learned to live with. There's no chance of me moving closer or hardwiring any game systems.

For a long time, we used a very old Linksys router, which... had its days. It wasn't great but it functioned. Some years I'd have great PSN but my laptop couldn't stay connected, some years it was vice-versa. Early this year, both connections really started to dip, so we tried several things to fix it. We upgraded our bandwidth and signal strength, which did nothing. So we opted to replace it. Of course, a few days before the new router was slated to arrive, both connections suddenly jumped to max with no hiccups. I can't tell if the router was begging us to keep it or laughing at our confusion.

So now we have this new router—I can check later but I think it's still Linksys—and it's actually worse than ever before. Sometimes my laptop connnection is full bars, but usually at least once a day it dips down below one bar, hiccups and disconnects frequently, usually for blocks of an hour at a time. And my PSN is just a mess: The first few weeks I couldn't even stay online, now I can maintain a connection for several hours but my download/upload speeds are pitiful so there's really no point. I'm currently struggling to download a game update, and actually playing any games is a tooth-pulling affair.

Just to add further confusion: I recently took up a house-sitting gig for a family friend, during which time I used their wi-fi. At all times my computer ran smoothly (unless it got hot of course), but my PSN was... worse than ever but also ok? I could download games and updates just fine, but my connection speed was balls and I'd lag out of any game instantly. And occasionally I'd just fail to connect, or disconnect quickly. When I got done with that gig and came back home, it was worse than ever, and I'm not sure why.

So here are all the possible causes we've gone over thus far:
    • Too far from the router, too many walls between me and the router • This might be the case, especially since my laptop connection is much better downstairs. But there's a lot of evidence against it. For one, I can get max speed on both my devices from here, I've done it before. And my roommate across the hall is pretty much sitting on top of the router, with only a floor/ceiling between them, and has similar connectivity hiccups.
    • Too many devices on the network • My mother, stepdad, roommate and I all have laptops, plus some of us use the network for our phones and I have my game systems. It could be that the network is strained, but with the recent upgrades and the fact that only my roommate and I have these problems, everyone else connects fine, I'm not so sure.
    • Devices overheating • I doubt this is it, since I've been using a cooling pad with my laptop and it still has issues. PS3 has a tendency to run hot, but it's always done that.
    • New ext. hard drive causing problems (Laptop) • I recently got a new 1TB hard drive, which came with some program for cloud storage or something? I really didn't see a need for it so I never installed it, but the hard drive may be trying to connect to the internet regardless. I first noticed this issue when it was brand-new, but after several months it seems to have died down.
    • Wires in the way (PS3) • I do have a lot of things hooked up at any one time. I've tried moving the PS3 around to see if I can get a more stable connection, but results are meh.
    • PSN netcode is garbage (PS3) • This was suggested by a friend, and maybe it's all there is to it. The PS3 on average has more problems with more networks that should run smoothly. I've tried everything with this damn console; I've manually assigned an IP address, subnet mask, set up a DMZ... Nothing works. In fact all my tinkering just seems to make it worse. I've google searched the problem dozens of times, run through every answer I can find, and there's just nothing left I can think to try.

I know system specs are missing from this post, but I'm also relatively computer-illiterate so I never know what specs I'm looking for. Just ask and I should be able to provide.

Image Links only. If you'd like me to choose the image myself, just specify what you want in it (character, symbol, etc.).
Size I prefer to work in 150x150 or 200x200, but if you simply must have higher/lower resolution then I'll see what I can do.
Colors You can specify a few colors, a palette, grayscale, or selective color (Some things grayscale, some not). May not be a perfect match but I'll do my best.
Luminous This is a sort of signature of mine: I apply a luminous color fill layer to the image that slightly inverts shades/hues and gives everything a warped, "negative" look. You can specify if you do or don't want it, or leave this field blank if you have no preference.
Other Anything else you want me to add, including text (Just bear in mind that I'm not amazing with that).
