A story of a lone French jeweler. In the city of Paris, the sense of beauty is absolutely everywhere; from the buildings to the streets and clothes. In the midst of this perilous beauty, however, is an old, slightly senile man. This man is considered the most ugly, the most insane and putrid thing in the entire city, an outcast or pariah which not even the homeless on the streets would look at. On a normal day, that without customers, he is forced to mentor the apprenticeship of a young girl from Bordeaux. As she works closely with the old man, she wonders why everyone appears to dislike the old man, the man himself in a state of slight sadness over society's attitude towards him. It appears he is ridiculed for his ugliness, and the girl begins to attempt to explain to the man, now in the last years of his life, that beauty is not a simple outward appearance. She takes him, in his last years of his life, through a lovely tour of the French countryside, a simpler and less hedonistic location, to help him stay happier. Reconciling with himself, he finally dies in peace, the girl knowing that he was the man that had the beauty of a marvelous jewel that outshined all.
