    Not too long ago actually, so I can't call myself an old fan or something haha. I'm only caught up with the Anime at the moment, but I'm thinking of starting the manga. Would you recommend? I heard that Togashi tends to go on hiatus a lot. I can't blame him really.
    I was honestly really surprised at how deep and dark it really is, and how it differs from other shonen animes, in a big way. Killua, man ;~;

    The question is, which anime? I would recommend the manga, certainly. He does go on hiatus an awful lot though, and for extended periods of time... Once, he went on hiatus for over a year. I believe he's on hiatus now, but am unsure as I am not caught up with it yet. Kind of problematic, because y'know the second anime is ongoing. Interestingly, I think the 2011 anime has gone on hiatus as well. They don't want to end the series prematurely, fall into the same trap as the first anime did (so to speak).

    Yes, Hunter x Hunter has a sort of kiddie front, an exterior if you will. I like how casually Killua's murderous streak is treated, it's not typically played for angst or anything like that. It averts the usual tropes; case in point: Kurapika. He shares Sasuke's fundamental backstory, but you do not see him losing his sense of morality or overall personality over it. Hallmark of good, mature writing.

    What I meant by that is Kurapika reads like an actual human being. Sasuke always fell kinda flat to me.

    The 2011 anime, obviously. And yeah, it did go on hiatus...but only for a few weeks apparently. It's genuinly a great adaption of the manga from what I've read of it. And the soundtrack is great.
    To be honest, I wouldn't mind it if the on-going anime does go on hiatus. They're starting to catch up with the manga and I really don't want it to do it's own thing if it does catch up, or do some fillers. I believe they might stop for a bit when the Chimera arc ends though.

    All the characters seem to be humanized and are relatable in a way. It's one of the reasons I love the series. Even Kurapika's obsession of revenge is understandable. Hell, the villains themselves are tragic in their own way and you feel really bad for them. The Troupe's friendship can be heartbreaking.
    There's just so many things that I never see coming in the series that shocks me every time. This is probably due to the things I've come to expect of other animes.

    Not obvious really, I've only watched the 1999 anime in its entirety. Of course, that was before the second anime was released; so watching the ongoing series wasn't an option then. After having watched the first ten episodes thereof, my opinion of it was rather low... If you say you like it perhaps I'll give it another shot, once I am caught up with the manga. Soundtrack gave me mixed feelings. Some of it I like, but oh lord the metal ending theme was *terrible* so bad & totally unbecoming.

    On the troupe; I have a soft spot for Machi. Curious. What have you been shocked by?

    Alright. I've finally caught up fully with the manga, and all I have to say to you is... There is not a light at the end of the tunnel. Prepare yourself for a world of pain.

    Yes, Togashi is on hiatus. He's said it will end sooner than the last did, which lasted for... two years. How reassuring. I intend to watch the 2011 anime now. Hopefully they'll simply go on hiatus when they catch up, that has me worried.

    Another thing, if you intend to read the manga I should warn you in advance that the art quality is all over the place. Some of the chapters, esp. during the Greed Island arc are literally scribbles! As Togashi is Shounen Jump's golden boy, he can get away with turning in messy work + lengthy hiatuses. The vague, messy artwork is in part the reason I am giving the anime another go, despite my initial doubts. The anime adaption will have to fill in what he left out art-wise, which'll significantly enhance the experience for manga readers I think.
