Okay, please forgive me because when I saw this it was a couple of years ago when when I was looking for more roleplay sites. I unfortunately do not remember the name of the site I was browsing when I saw this, but hopefully you'll get the gist. When I was on that site, if you wanted to make a thread, one of the options was to set an icon for the thread. It appeared just like our avatars do next to the title. It wasn't required, just something to draw the eye, if you will. I thought it was neat but brushed it aside until we received that update which enabled us to view the avatar of the person that posted the thread, along with our avatar representing that we have replied in that thread. I kept forgetting about it, which is why I'm just now bringing it up, but I was wondering if there was a feature that would enable us to do that? I think it would be more for the Creativity Corner than anything else, but might be something other people want to do depending on the content of their thread. User's could put their artwork as the thread icon for the Graphic Art section or the title banner of a roleplay for the RPA.
There is an add-on available for this: http://xenforo.com/community/resources/thumbnails-by-waindigo.223/ Still want to let people weigh in but just saying that it is possible.
I think this is a really great idea. I'm one of those people who likes to make my threads in the creative corner catch the eye and a thread thumbnail would definitely not hurt. It would also help me find threads faster since I generally look at the avatars of the people who posted for the thread, rather than the title itself [too many title names to remember aaah] and a picture would help in that aspect... but I think that's just my own problem. Really I'd just love this for more of an aesthetic purpose...
If the automatic overwriting using images found in the thread can be disabled, I think this would be great for larger long-term threads. For examples where staff might benefit, staff could use it to visually categorize different types of site-related updates or even categorically thumbnail event-related threads. Think Castle Oblivion thumbs for the Castle Oblivion event. This would be very cool. Good suggestion, OP.
Why represent who posted the content when you can represent the content itself? I think it has an option to only overwrite the avatar when the thread creator says so.
Most of the time you don't know who is who just by their avatar anyway, they change so frequently. It won't disable the creator's name. It's not really a disadvantage to have that. I also really like what @Makaze had to add. Making specific thumbnails for things like events would be helpful. Or for instance, games like Sax's Dress Up Contest. You see the thumbnail and automatically know it's the new game without even having to look at the title.
I would rather install it as an optional thing -- default is avatar, but if someone wants, they can specify different.
well optional is fine. would rather have it as optional, than not have it at all. i was just agreeing that it would be neat to have set thumbnails for events or things like when you post board updates and there's the gummi ship every time.
Oh yeah, we could do things like that of course. I was more thinking it'd be good for KH news posts etc but it has a lot of usages.
I'd like to see it implemented as an optional feature. That way everyone could have their own way and we would get the bonuses of each.
I agree with that, it looks like a nice feature and if the default is avatar unless specified then I see no problem with it. I am fully for this.
