In the future, there are three superpowers. Japan, the Chinese federation to the east and Britannia to the west. Britannia invades Japan and forces it into submission by using mechas called Knightmares. It is renamed Area 11. A boy named Lelouch is a self-exiled prince of Britannia due to an accident that killed his mother and stole his sister's sight and legs. He lives in Japan with a friend named Suzaku. One day he gets involved in a terrorist attack and accidentally gets the power to make anyone obey him, but only once per person. He procedes to win the trust of rebels and formulate an army to crush Britannia. To do this, he dons the mask of Zero, a mysterious freedom fighter that hates Britannia.
