For the past few weeks, I have been filling out job applications as if my life depends on it (and it does in a way). My main issue tough is that many places require a minimum of three contacts in their references section. This is further complicated by the fact that these references cannot be family. I only have two non-familial adults who can--and are willing--to fit into this role. Because of this, I was not able to apply to a number of jobs.

My question is: should companies punish those not able to reach a reasonable minimum of references?

After Sangria left, Ursa sat down in her seat to wait out the rest of the pre-Game nonsense. The Valens around her moved around noisily, and there was an overwhelming mix of scents and voices and alcohol. The vodka went untouched in front of her. The arrival of Magnus shocked her out of her own head, causing her to grit her teeth at the large Valen's needless shout. She was quite content to see the male taken down by one of Sangria's bottles. Even if said bottle didn't come from the Valen--if the shout was anything to go by.

"Everyone who is not seated, please sit."

Crestatia, the unspoken leader in Ursa's books, spoke authoritatively. It sent a well earned shiver down the Ice's spine. She smiled as the much powerful Valen introduced their game and coordinator. She reached for a card as Marina spoke as well. Diamond...interesting enough. The guidelines seemed simple enough. This wasn't her first game, but it was definitely the easiest to lay out a strategy for.

Pain shot through her rapidly at the first toll. The bell was much louder than the other Valens, nearly bursting her overly sensitive ears. Ursa cried out as it continued to sound, curling into a ball in her seat. It was too much and it seemed to be all around her. She tasted blood as she bit her cheek.

She tried to keep her whimpers quiet until the bell stopped ringing. Slowly she unfolded herself from her chair, looking around with dazed eyes. So many of the Valens were gone from the room. She reached up to feel the liquid seeping from her ears. Blood. She cursed and wasn't shocked to find her voice distorted to her own hearing. She stood shakily, holding onto the table until the ringing stopped and she felt a little more steady.

She stumbled to Marina, holding out her hand. "Coordinator," she greeted, wincing at the faraway sound of her own voice. "I believe the others may be in trouble. We must hurry." She sniffed the air, smiling when her nose seemed unaffected by the other shot senses. "I may not be able to hear clearly for the next hour, but I can trace Sangria's scent. I will lead you to them."

The majority of Ursa's attention was directed to Sangria's speech. However she did notice the witch angrily approaching her. The calculating Valen fixed her eyes on the foul smelling Kuru. "You know, pranks aren't very fun, let me show you what I mean. I'm thinking, a nasty break out," the woman said, touching her cheek. Ursa barely flinched as she felt the flesh grow and become acne.

"You need to just calmed down," she replied with a put on smile. "Don't be so hot headed." With a blink, a sheet of ice began to form on the affected spot. It wouldn't heal it, but at least it would stop the irritation and soften the blow a bit. With a dismissive sound, she turned to face the approaching brewmistress.

"I have never seen you at my parties, hun." One of the coveted bottles was offered to her, but she eyed it with uncertainty. "There is no reason to be suspicious, dear. ❤ I am not looking to get anybody drunk on my own volition, and I do believe the nature of this particular drink suits you, wouldn't you say?" Ursa had to smirk at that, touching the bottle to drop the temperature down to a manageable level.

"I am not one for parties, dear Temptress," Ursa replied civilly. "I do accept this gift however." She took it before the woman could drink it anymore, sitting back while sipping slowly.

The appearance of the doppelganger confused her greatly at first until she saw through the trick. "I have to say. I've never seen such a pretty looking lady in my life! ❤"
"Wouldn't you agree, Ursa? I think I'm in looove. ❤"

"It is a pity to the rest of us that you chose to love only yourself," Ursa teased in reply. Her ears were catching the echos in the copies speech. "Prism, dear? Is that you?" she called as she didn't notice the other Valen anywhere in the Hall and she doubted he left while Sangria was making her speeches.

The stronger the pain reliever they give you afterwards, the less you remember. At least that was how it was for me. Vicodin rocks.

The silence of the room weighed heavily until another Valen appeared. Ursa ignored him for the most part until he greeted them. She silently nodded to him, but made no move to speak. It did peak her interest in the rest of the procession though. The boyish Valen, Prism she thought his name was, sat alone eating chocolates. Then came Sangria.

The tales of the brewmistress had not missed her tiny city nor had her wine been ignored in her stores and pubs. She silently wished for a taste of the Valen's vodka but was ignored for more flavorful meat. Their coordinator. Kuru, whose scent reached Ursa's sensitive nose with a wrath, also teased the newest immortal, making a fool of herself while drunk.

It was maddening listening to them banter and bargain with Marina, with each other.
Sangria was loud, overly confident, and overall rude though even she had to admit that her talents were greatly appreciated when she actually used them in a somewhat wise manner. Kuru just completely rubbed Ursa the wrong way though. Perhaps it was her medical scent or her outward manner and loud voice. Whatever the reason, the witch was having way too much fun.

If they are having fun, why can't I? She thought to herself as she stood. She made her way to Prism, standing behind his chair with a smirk. "What to see something cool?" she asked him with a smirk. She spread out her fingers in front of her face, facing Kuru. She focused on the air around the woman, dropping the temperature sharply. A bead of sweat ran down her temple from the effort. The room was affecting her more than she thought. Soon though it was cold enough in that one spot to keep her quiet for a bit.

She smirked sitting down on the tables edge with a shiver of her own before she recovered.
"Thank you to those of you that have already arrived. It is much appreciated. I do believe we should be starting soon, so just hold tight," she heard Marina say.

"No worries, Lady Coordinator," Ursa replied with a small, discreet smile. "We are entertaining ourselves just fine."

It shouldn't have been such a surprise to her small family that Ursa decided to join in this game. She had grown restless in her snow covered home. They would have killed her if they had only realized she had gone to bet all her land with the casting of her rooks. It was the only true way to live in her opinion. Absolute freedom or damning exile. That was the ultimatum she gave herself when she set out from her home. There would be a harsh win for her or nothing at all. She would not return to Eis empty handed.

Ursa arrived in the morning, laden with a sample of Eis' main export. It was much too warm in the Hall of Games for a gift of furs, but her traders insisted that it would increase their sales. Being ever the agreeable host, she obliged them with the opportunity to show off what the little city could do. She sold many of the pieces on her journey to the Hall, sending the money back to the merchants and tailors. She didn't need it where she was going.

Despite the heat, the Hall was quite beautiful. Had she been one to express emotions, she surely would have gasped at the sight. She felt the drain on her power as soon as she entered the door, unsurprised though because of the stories that the old God had made it so. Still, she doubted that she could have covered the whole foyer with ice any longer. She removed her traveling coat and tilted her head at the two Valens already in attendance.

Her remaining furs were placed on the table in front of her. She wouldn't actively trade, but if someone wanted them, she wouldn't mind negotiating. Ursa sat back in the chair, resting her head against the seat as she stared at the ceiling pensievely. She was so ready to get it over with that now that she was here she had no idea what to do with herself. She considered playing with her ice or go off exploring. The thought of even communicating never even crossed her mind.
