New KH3 Screenshot Commemorates FFVII's 20th Anniversary

A new screenshot from 'Kingdom Hearts III' was posted on the official Japanese Kingdom Hearts Twitter account to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII:

The screenshot is a clear homage to the iconic FFVII artwork from the game's cover. Whether or not this screenshot will actually end up in the game, or was just something done for FFVII's 20th anniversary, remains to be seen. Nevertheless, it looks pretty cool.

Official Kingdom Hearts Website Gets Massive Update

The official Kingdom Hearts website has just received a massive update, such as dividing the series into four games (Unchained χ[chi], HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and of course KH3), new character summaries, worlds being listed with the movie they are based off of, as well as the addition of images and past trailers. Interesting things to note in the updated website include the following timeline:

Also, the area usually referred to as the Dark Margin now appears to have an official name:

Nomura Talks 2.8 HD FCP and KH3 w/ Famitsu

In the upcoming issue of Famitsu, 'Kingdom Hearts' series director, Tetsuya Nomura, talks a bit on KH3's development, as well as story details on 'Kingdom Hearts 2.8 HD Final Chapter Prologue' (which are expected to contain spoilers):

This year is Kingdom Hearts’ 15th, Final Fantasy VII’s 20th, Final Fantasy’s 30th anniversaries. Tell us more about those.

First, we’ll release Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 in January, then we have Final Fantasy VII’s snow exhibit at the Snow Festival in Sapporo in February, and in March we have the release of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 Remix and the start of the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour. We might also be able to do something at Disney’s “D23” event. We’re also waiting on the start of Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ[chi]’s second season.

Will there be a bundle that has all the contents from Kingdom Hearts 1.5+2.5 HD Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8?

The timing doesn’t work out for us this time around, so we won’t release anything like a complete pack, but we’ve prepared a box that allows you to put in both software, something you often see with DVDs and such. It’ll likely be an e-Store bonus.

What’s the development status on Kingdom Hearts III?

The production process is different than what we’ve had up until now, so I can’t just give you a general idea, but I can say that there are worlds that still remain untouched. We’ve advanced on the production of worlds that have yet to be announced, so we can’t show them for now. As far as development status goes, there’s still a ways to go.

What’s the development status on Final Fantasy VII Remake?

We’re making steady progress on its production. While we are indeed working on it, I think we’ll have you guys wait a little longer for both Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII Remake. I do apologize for that, but we’ll make up for it by making it into something that will meet expectations. We didn’t share much information on either of the two titles last year, but I hope to show its progress at some event this year. The release of these titles will still be a while. However, we have many titles releasing this year, and we hope you look forward to any ‘surprises’.

Extended Dengeki Interview with Nomura

The guys over at Dengeki have posted an extended version of Nomura's most recent interview with them, containing additional questions, where Nomura confirms that Riku, like Sora, will have a new outfit in KH3, and that the outfit is the one Riku is wearing in artwork Nomura drew to commemorate the 3rd anniversary of 'Kingdom Hearts χ[chi]' in Japan. The fully translated interview can be read below:

- As I played KH0.2, I didn’t expect to have such a hard time because of the Shadows (laughs).

Nomura: Influence from the Realm of Darkness have caused Shadows to become much more powerful. In the E3 demo, you could fight a boss made up of a cluster of Shadows. Thanks to the specs of the current engine, we were able to create this boss while animating so many enemies.

- Character decorations have been introduced to the series as a novelty element.

Nomura: Due to the limited volume, we tried to think of something fun to play with and the staff devised it in a rush. You can change the appearance of the character, so please collect many of the items and customize your own Aqua.

- Will decoration elements be introduced in KHIII?

Nomura: Although we knew we could put it in this game, putting it in KHIII would depend on the timeframe as other things are of higher priority. We'll keep an eye on the reactions for customization in 0.2.

- The encounter between Aqua and the King, as well as their joint combat, have been revealed.

Nomura: I think many fans had begun to realize that Aqua and the King do meet in the Realm of Darkness. Because Aqua is alone until she meets the King, it was really difficult to write the scenario dialogue. Once the King appears, writing conversations between the two proved easier.

- In 0.2, there are scenes of Riku and the King in new outfits, so I’m looking forward to the announcement for KHIII.

Nomura: All costume designs have been finished and I feel very confident about them. It is based on the costume Riku wore in the KHX 3rd anniversary illustration.

- The light tone from Master of Masters stands out and there's an eeriness as you can't read his motives.

Nomura: I thought it would be cool if a character like that could think deeply and scheme, and I wondered if it would be easy to understand. After thinking about it, the idea for this "tremendously great guy" materialized inside of me, and that became the Master. I’m sure he’s an amazing person, and he will behave in such a way.

- As for the personality of the Master, I think the voice acting from Tomokazu Sugita also reflects that.

Nomura: I was pretty troubled for the cast. Since I decided to have a master figure, I looked for someone who could play such a role. I thought about how the conversations would be executed and Mr. Sugita was the most qualified for the role. The recordings were done individually for each voice actor, but the conversations feel as though they weren't.

- Little by little, we're getting to see Ephemer. Will his role be more important?

Nomura: Ephemer and Skuld are becoming considerably important in the second season of KH Unchained X. Although the story of KHX has concluded, the story of Unchained Chi exists in another dimension. The relationship around that will be told in the second season so please wait for the next report.

- For additional content in the HD version of Dream Drop Distance, three new spirits were added.

Nomura: They are small but exciting additions. Catnuki, Sudo Beat, and Yuagari Penguin have been chosen from our ideas. For Yuagari penguin, it is interesting to note that there is no hot water (laughs).

- Over 50 spirits will appear in the game but what’s your favorite?

Nomura: Same as before, it must be Meow Wow. Every time I make a new enemy type I draw the first one as a base (Shadow for Heartless, Dusk for Nobody) but in the case of Dream Eaters, Meow Wow was the most memorable. A while ago at Artnia (Square Enix Official Shop/Cafe), I found the original drawing of Meow Wow I drew at the time but it was clearly sketchy… I am surprised I made it so cute from there.

UPDATE: FATHER RETRACTS STATEMENT Utada Hikaru Officially Writing Theme Song for Kingdom Hearts III!

UPDATED: For the second time, over the past few years, her father has retracted his statement:

Since Kingdom Hearts II, fans have been wondering if Utada Hikaru would return to write another song for Kingdom Hearts III. It's certainly been a winding road to get here--Utada herself at one point said she wouldn't due to issues with Disney over payment, then her father at another point Tweeted that she would, then immediately recanted. Now, with Utada fresh off her five-year hiatus from music, we have official confirmation that she is indeed writing a brand-new song for Kingdom Hearts III!

The confirmation comes from her father's Twitter, and this time, it seems to be for real. "Actually we have already started," he says in the Tweet. "Sorry for keeping you waiting."

While we wait to hear the new song, we'll still have the Simple and Clean (Ray of Hope) Mix EP releasing on iTunes on January 11 to tide us over. The EP is available for pre-order now.
