There's an overall plot but the series as a whole is episodic in a vein similar to Cowboy Bebop, so you don't stay in one place for too long, but the overall plot is still there & is basically character drive, which I love & you love so that's great. I'd recommend watching this first before my second suggestion, although the second is much quicker to get through.
2. Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Only 12 episodes, a central female protagonist and FOUR other young girls as major characters. It's a magical girl show, and I don't wanna say any further than that b/c plot. There's three movies, but only the 3rd is the important one imo. It's a follow up to the show's events and is called Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion. It's legitimately got put in the nomination run for an Emmy, so lol.
3. Legend of Korra: already got u with all my korrasami and my great post about it, so I won't say too much else lol. You don't need to watch Avatar: the Last Airbender to be able to understand what happens in Korra~ (it's a direct sequel but they really make the effort to make it accessible while still having the connection to the old show).
4. Still would rec ATLA because it's fantastic, although it's definitely more of a time commitment than Korra is. Korra operates on more one season arcs while ATLA was a single arc built up over three separate seasons. They both have the same amount of episodes in the end, but imo Korra is easier to sit down and get into as a result of the structure.
I think that's about it? Ping Pong the Animation is great, but doesn't have that many women & I know you probably wouldn't be into that right now (it's prob the only major sleight I have against the show), but I'll put that on the table anyway in case it's something you ever wanna pick up later down the road.
apparently there is a new show out this season called rolling girls??? i have heard from my trusted weeb source it's rly good. it looks like the same high octane ridiculous fighting of kill la kill & is centered around female characters. there's only like three episodes out now (the first of which i'm watching rn lol), might wait it out to binge later but thought i should add more to The List
there's also a pretty old show from the 90s called revolutionary girl utena, which rebecca sugar has said she loves a whole bunch. apparently there was also an ep of steven universe that even had some utena shoutouts in it. i haven't watched this yet so i can't speak on it but i heard it was awesomesauce
