I think of it as a side act during games, and as a competition at other places.
To me, a sport is two teams going against each other at the same time, scoring points with an object (Ball, puck, etc.)
Everything else such as gymnastics, golf, boxing, cheerleading, swimming, etc. I consider it a competition.

    A sport is...

So technically if the cheerleaders aren't cheering against anyone else, it's not a sport.

Then again colleges do take people on cheerleading scholarships, so I could be wrong

It's not a sport. But I thought cheerleading was to cheer on your school team or whatever, not to attract boys.

It's a sport just as much as dance is.
I consider dance to be a sport, so why not cheerleading?
There is the whole competitive element to it as well which makes it even more settled in a sport imo. Even if there isn't an opposing cheerleading squad they are still bringing a competitive edge into the context by increasing morale.

I guess by defenition it is considered a sport. And it is, in a way, scored since you are cheering on your team to do better than an opposing team.

If it was like a video game, cheerleaders would be what I call 'the buffers' by increasing the morale and stats of other characters. But that's my geek brain working.

If they are on the football field (or were ever) and there is no other cheerleading team that is competing against them, then it's not a sport.
but if they are in competitions, then it's a sport
plus it is a physically demanding sport so yes i could be considered a sport because of that

    I wish we had cheerleaders where I live ;~;

According Wikipedia it's a sport, but I disagree.
It's basically the same as dancing. It's difficult and it requires athletic skill, but yeah, dancing can also be very difficult and it also requires skill and that's not considered a sport either.
I'm talking about normal cheerleading here btw, not the competitive kind.

    Wouldn't the cheerleaders need cheerleaders?

...the only reason this question comes up so much is cause girls want to drag out the guys who are gonna say its not a sport so they can act like they are being discriminated against...i think it's not a sport when it's used as a peripheral to a sport

Is wearing skimpy clothes a Sport?....No.

Is a combination of the three a sport....I dont think so.

Well, if you think about it, Cheerleading is dancing but to support their team. And a lot of the routines have gymnastics in it at some point with the lifts and flips. So, saying that Cheerleading isn't a sport would then say that Gymnastics and Dancing aren't sports either.

Doesn't that kinda cancel everything out then?
