    Howdy!

We're nearly a week into 2024 now, so let's talk about the video games you loved in 2023! What were your favorites on a particular system, what were the best soundtracks, best multiplayer...and so on and so forth!

We don't have to just talk about the ones that debuted in 2023, though; what are some older ones you played for the first time in 2023?

    -

It slid in right at the end of the year, but as far as 2023 games go, I've been loving Palia on my Switch! Back when they had free NSO trials, I tried fellow farm sims Stardew Valley and Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town, but neither of them grabbed me like Palia has. I'm not far in the game (it's been out less than a month, and it's been the holidays lol) but everything has been so satisfying. (Except fishing. I can't figure out the fishing.) The world is charming and cozy, the characters are fun and varied, and I really like the mystery at the heart of it. Hodari I WILL make you fall in love with me.

Another 2023 debut favorite has been Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, and really, it's no surprise. I put so many hours into Curtain Call on the 3DS, and I'm ready to plug even more into this one! It took some adjusting to get used to the button controls after years of playing with the touch screen, but it's simple and natural and intuitive! (I know we're on a Kingdom Hearts forum, but the controls are indisputably better than Melody of Memory's, if you're wondering about the comparison.) If you like Final Fantasy and you like Final Fantasy music, playing this is a no-brainer. But if you need further convincing, the free demo has thirty songs to try!

2023 honorable mentions: Fire Emblem Engage, Pokémon TCG Live

As for older games I first started in 2023...

I bought Hades after the 2022 Game Awards when they announced the sequel, and it went half-off digitally. I'd been holding off and planning to get a physical copy, but it was time, and half-off is hard to beat. Also hard to beat: Megaera! I turned on God Mode and we're still trucking away! I knew everyone loved this game, and I suspected I would at least like it, but WOW the gameplay loop so much more addicting than I was expecting! The music, of course, slaps, and while I was unsure of some of the voice work at first blush, it's proven to be just as excellent. And it's funny! It's a funny game! You don't think that looking from the outside, but it is! Favorite weapons so far: bow > spear > shield > sword.

I'll be real—I mostly started Dragon Age: Inquisition for Iron Bull. I feel perfectly reasonable and justified in that. And in the interest of full disclosure, I haven't yet played much more than the first couple hours of my first sit-down with it. But the world is immediately so interesting! My only previous Dragon Age experience is, like, maybe an hour of Origins? Which was fine, but didn't hook me like Inquisition. You wouldn't think so from my playtime, but I'm fascinated to see where this plot and these characters go. (Also I'm so mad that my round-faced elf is stuck with a tiny twig body and I can't make him Bigger.) (Oh yeah he's also an archer rogue. Groundbreaking I know lol)

Pre-2023 honorable mentions: Splatoon 3, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore, Arcade Spirits

Had the idea for this after the KHIV reveal trailer a couple months ago, and finally managed to finish it over the weekend! \o/

You can also read it on AO3 here!

Sora's tongue poked out of the corner of his mouth as he tried to wriggle the wooden block free from the tower with just his thumb and forefinger.

"Careful," Strelitzia warned, watching just as intently.

"I aaalmost got it," Sora said. The top half of the tower twisted with the block's movement, and they both drew in sharp breaths, Sora freezing in place. After a moment, he carefully resumed his work, and eventually—though it turned the tower just a bit more—the block slid free.

"What!" Strelitzia shrieked, jumping to her feet as Sora smugly placed his prize atop the tower.

    "Your turn now!"

She eyed the tower wearily. Where it hadn't proven too sturdy to budge on earlier turns, it was row upon row of single blocks in a spindly stack, and the whole thing looked ready to tumble down at the most feather-light touch. She sank back onto the couch with a groan. "How am I supposed to win now?"

Sora grinned at her. "Aw, c'mon, you'll never know unless you try! If you don't see anything right away, try thinking outside the box!"

Outside the box... Her gaze kept coming back to the tower's fragile midsection. It would be impossible to swipe one of those single blocks—which meant that if she was going to follow his advice and do something unexpected, that was the place to try it. As she studied the structure, a memory bubbled up: once, she'd been in the Moogle's shop in Daybreak Town when he was showing off some fancy dinnerware. She wasn't sure what practical application the demonstration had in hindsight, but at one point he whipped the tablecloth from the fully set table, to the amazement of the assembled crowd, without disturbing the dishes. Maybe, if she was fast enough...

Strelitzia closed her thumb and forefinger around a block. Sora leaned in. She took a deep breath...and yanked.

The upper half of the tower dropped with a CLUNK , two blocks in the same direction now stacked on top of each other, and wobbled. Then it fell still.

Strelitzia let out an involuntary "Oh!" Then, she repeated again, higher-pitched, "Oh!"

Sora whooped and jumped to his feet, pulling Strelitzia with him. "You did it!" he crowed.

    "I did! I did it! I really—"

    They bumped the table.

    Their heads swiveled back down.

    The tower swayed.

And then it toppled, blocks scattering with a crash.

    "Noooooo!"

Even in the dark of night, Quadratum continued to bustle outside the apartment. Cars continued up and down the highway, people ambled and chatted across the sidewalks and crosswalks, city lights glittered as far as the eye could see.

Inside the apartment, though, it was only a quiet hum in the background as Strelitzia and Sora sprawled across the floor. "I really almost had it," Strelitzia sighed.

"Not almost," Sora said. "You did have it!" His smile turned sheepish. "If it wasn't for me getting all excited, we could've had a more fair end to the game."

Strelitzia turned her head to look at him. "If it wasn't for you," she said, "I would've just given up, and never tried at all! So...thank you, Sora." She giggled. "Pulling that off without it all falling down felt pretty incredible."

"Aw, well, what are friends for?"

    Friends...

Tears suddenly pricked at her eyes, a strange weight settling in her heart. Unfortunately, Sora noticed when she looked back up at the ceiling and rubbed her face. "Hey, what's wrong?"

"Nothing," she replied, but the waver in her voice wasn't exactly subtle. "...Well. Sorry, it's just—" She swallowed and cleared her throat. "I've...never really had a friend before."

When Sora finally responded, it was only with a small "Never?"

"I mean—I had my brother," Strelitzia said quickly. "And—and I was friendly with the other members of my Union! And I don't mean to discount my brother, because I really love him, and he really loved me, but other than him...I wasn't really close to anyone." For a moment, the plain white ceiling above her turned purple in her mind's eye, and then opened up into a brilliant misty sunrise, full of blues and pinks and golds. "There was...this one person, though." Her heart fluttered in her chest as she recalled their face. "I really wanted to be their friend..."

    "What happened?"

Strelitzia smiled through the water trailing from her eyes. "I got sent here. Right when I'd finally worked up the courage to talk to them."

Sora's hand found hers, threading their fingers together. "I'm sorry," he said. She closed her eyes.

They listened to the distant traffic for a little while. When a clock in the apartment chirped a jaunty tune to mark the hour, Strelitzia wiped her face again. "...It's getting late," she said with a sniffle. "We should probably get to bed."

She started to pick herself up to stand, but Sora squeezed her hand, and she paused. He sat up with her, and she was surprised by the intensity in his blue eyes. "When we get outta here," he said, "I'm gonna introduce you to all my friends." He beamed. "I think they'll really like you! And I'll help you find your brother, too! We all will!"

Out of here? she thought incredulously. But all the same, something in the weight in her heart shifted, and she couldn't help smiling back. She couldn't help the next words out of her mouth, either: "...Could you...tell me about them?"

    Sora's smile grew brighter.

The final update for mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road has been delayed from its previously-announced winter 2021/2022 release. No new release window has been announced.

This upcoming update is slated to make Dark Road offline-only, as well as conclude the game's plot in one last go. Specifically, the announcement cites a significant addition to the game's scenario as the delay's primary cause. The game remains unplayable in the interim.

Dark Road's Japanese Twitter account released a few new screenshots from this final update to tide fans over. KH13's Ryuji has translated those screenshots, as seen below:

Right on schedule, The Pokémon Company announced the ninth generation of the core series today, Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.

The games, set in a region that seems to resemble Spain, will be fully open-world, with wild Pokémon wandering the overworld as in other recent Switch entries. You'll be able to pick from Grass-type Sprigatito, Fire-type Fuecoco, and Water-type Quaxly for your starter.

    View attachment 50812

The games are scheduled to launch in late 2022. You can check out the official site here.

I honestly didn't expect Gen IX to launch this year; I figured we'd get Legends: Arceus DLC for our yearly release, like how 2020 gave us the Sword & Shield expansion pass. But then again, it's also been the standard three years since the last generation now, so I guess that's on me lol. The game looks promising so far, though; looking forward to seeing more, not looking forward to Even More of the Same Discourse recycled from SwSh's release cycle.

Anyway, I'm gonna start with Fuecoco. What about you?

I've been working on this on and off since May the 4th, trying to get it ready to dump on AO3. It's still not done, but the first half or so of it is, and I'm kinda tired of hanging onto it without that sweet, sweet validation. So here's the first half! And hopefully sharing it here will help motivate me to finish it lol.

Anyway: This takes place after Melody of Memory, so there are some spoilers for that. And if you recognize the title, you'll know exactly what and who this is crossing over with (though there are some other hints before the reveal). Enjoy!

Something about the Keyblade Graveyard felt...wrong.

No, wrong wasn't quite the right word, Kairi thought. Maybe...off. Different. Charged. Granted, the one time she'd been here before was when Xehanort and his Organization had been riling things up. Maybe this was what the Keyblade Graveyard normally felt like?

Either way, Kairi kept her guard up. She left her Keyblade unsummoned, but she could feel energy thrumming in her palm, the weapon ready to leap to her hand.

She'd come alone. "You sure that's a good idea?" Lea had said when she called him on the Gummiphone to tell him her plan.

"Riku and Mickey are busy investigating Quadratum and Scala ad Caelum, and Aqua isn't back from the Realm of Darkness yet," she replied. "I can't just sit around and do nothing. Besides, it's not like Xehanort is around to try anything anymore, right?"

Lea frowned at that. "I'll go with you," he said.

"Thank you," Kairi said sincerely, "but I just—I need to do this myself. For me."

Lea sighed. "I guess I know the feeling," he said. "But if something goes wrong—"

"Then you know where I am, and I can call you."

"Okay," he relented. "Be safe, okay?"

"That's the plan," was Kairi's chipper reply. "Thank you, Lea."

As the wind blew through the Graveyard, keychains rattling across the barren desert in a rising hissing noise, Kairi certainly felt very alone and exposed. But she clung to her certainty that she needed to investigate here on her own and continued trudging forward.

Investigate what, though? Xehanort's labyrinth had sunk back into the rock upon his defeat; that would have been the first place to look. Kingdom Hearts, gratefully, no longer loomed in the sky. May your heart be your guiding key, she'd been told by...somebody. And here she was, trying to follow that directive. But what was it guiding her towards? What was she looking for?

The wind blew harder, and Kairi raised an arm to shield her face from the coarse, rough sand that kicked up, not at all like the sand on Destiny Islands. Irritated, she kept pushing on, part of her bemoaning that it was going to get everywhere. But with each step she took, the wind increased, until she found herself in the midst of a sandstorm. She pulled her hood across her nose and mouth and squeezed her eyes shut as the sand blasted across her. One moment the wind would be blowing straight against her, and the next it would be driving her to the side, and she stumbled as she tried to keep walking. The Gummiphone in her skirt pocket thumped repeatedly against her thigh in the whirling winds. Between it and the storm and her own swirling thoughts, she stopped.

...No. No, she wasn't going to let a little bad weather get in her way.

She thought of Sora. She thought of him yawning and stretching on the play island's beach. She thought of him desperately clutching her hand as they drifted apart from each other at the End of the World's collapse. She thought of their drawing on the cave's wall. She thought of joining him in battle in The World That Never Was. She thought of welcoming him home as he washed up on the beach after defeating Xemnas. She thought of sitting with him in a tree and sharing a paopu fruit. She thought of the two of them finally striking Xehanort down together. She thought of holding his hand as they took in the wide blue vista of The Final World.

"Be with me, Sora," Kairi murmured.

And she took a step forward.

Just like that, the sandstorm dissipated. The winds fell still, the sand fell to the ground—or had either even been there in the first place? She slowly lowered her arms and cracked her eyes open.

She stood at the bottom of a canyon basin, which surprised her; she hadn't felt herself walk downhill, let alone fall. Oddly-shaped crags and cairns stood around the basin, and when her eyes followed them up to the sky, she jumped when she saw that the sun had already sunk mostly behind the stone above her, the oranges and purples giving way to deep dark blue. Moreover, the stars dotting the sky were unfamiliar to her—there was variation, of course, from world to world, but she could usually find at least a few she recognized. This sky was entirely alien.

She was shaken from her racing thoughts when a voice echoed throughout the canyon: "Who disturbs my solitude?"

Kairi, faintly, had a bad feeling about this.

She looked around for the voice's source. "...Hello?" she said, the thrumming in her palm growing. "Who's there?"

The ground beneath her shook. Then—there—she whirled to see one of the larger rock formations shifting, growing taller—expanding?—no, unfolding—until before her sat a quadrupedal being the size of a large house, covered in craggy plating, with an ox-like face and what looked like an enormous red beard, gazing balefully down at her with glowing white eyes.

"I believe," he said, "that that is what I asked you."

Somehow, Kairi managed not to gape open-mouthed. "Well," she managed. "My... My name is Kairi. I...don't really know how I got here, actually. I didn't mean to disturb you; I was...looking for a friend..." She trailed off as the being dipped his head down to peer more closely at her.

"Ah!" he suddenly said, and Kairi jumped. "Daughter of Ashla!" He inclined his head and drew back. "You honor me with your presence, child."

Kairi's heart skipped a beat. She didn't know her parents. "Ashla?" she repeated.

"Ashla," the being said with a nod. "The Light. You are one of the Pure Hearts, are you not?"

"I..." She blinked. "I suppose so."

    "You suppose?"

"No—I mean—well—I am," she said, feeling foolish. "I am one of the Pure Hearts. I'm sorry, I—didn't think there were many people who knew about them. Us. The term I was told is 'Princess of Heart'." She hesitated. "Who are you?" she asked. "And where exactly is this?"

"I am the Bendu," he said. "I am the one in the middle, between the Ashla and Bogan, the Light and Dark. As for where we are," he continued, "you know just as much as I, my dear."

Kairi's shoulders slumped. "So you don't know, either."

"Did I say that?" He stroked his beard. "Very well, then, we are lost."

Kairi looked askance at the Bendu. A test, then. "I'm definitely in a different world than I was," she said slowly. "And it's got to be pretty far away from where I was. I've figured that much out." When the Bendu said nothing, she continued, "It could be that I don't know any of these stars because I'm in the Realm of Sleep—but I think I'd know if I was in the Realm of Sleep, wouldn't I? And how would I have gotten there? As far as I know, it's not exactly a place you stumble into." She paused. "Well, but we all go there on some level when we dream, don't we?" Tapping her chin, she admitted, "I guess I can't rule it out after all."

"Well reasoned," said the Bendu with a short nod. "Reason may only take one so far, however. Tell me, Kairi, Daughter of Ashla: where do your feelings lead you?"

Her feelings... Her heart... Often those led her to Sora, or to Riku, but they were both beyond her reach; she could feel the futility of her attempt to trace those connections. They weren't severed—she'd feel if they were—they simply...led nowhere. She shifted her focus. Aqua? The further she traced that connection, the more a sticky sourness filled her senses; she was still in the Realm of Darkness with Terra and Ventus. Ah, but then! If she was able to sense that— "We're in the Realm of Light," she said, her voice solid and certain. "In a world far, far away." But there was something more, something she couldn't quite put her finger on. The distance she'd traced her connection to Aqua had felt yawning in a way beyond the distance between worlds, beyond the distance between the Realms of Light and Darkness. Yet at the same time it hadn't felt so far at all. Time travel? part of her wondered, but time travel didn't work like this.

She shook her head. "What this world is doesn't matter right now," she said. "The details of it, anyway. I'm here now, for whatever reason, so that's what I need to focus on."

The Bendu smiled down at her. "Some become so lost in the pursuit of knowledge that they discard prudence," he said. "You are wise to consider what is most pressing." Kairi couldn't help but preen a little at the compliment. "And on this wise," he continued, "I believe you said something about searching for someone? A friend?"

"Yes!" Kairi said. "My friend, Sora. Well, I'm not so much looking for him—I know where he is, more or less. One of my other friends has gone there to find him." She sighed and looked up past the Bendu to the unfamiliar night sky. "I just hoped that maybe I could...I don't know. Find something to help from this side of reality?"

The Bendu went very still. "Reality?"

"That's right. Sora got trapped in—unreality? That's what Ansem the Wise called it. Or fiction."

The sky suddenly seemed terribly dark and the Bendu suddenly seemed terribly large. "I know of this Sora of whom you speak," he spat. "A meddler. One who perverts the laws of nature for his own selfish desires!"

"What? No!" Kairi protested. "Yes, he broke a taboo, but he wasn't—isn't selfish!"

"No?" the Bendu thundered. "His actions had nothing to do with his childish attachment to you? You, who he treats as little more than a cherished possession?"

"I am nobody's possession," Kairi snapped, swinging an arm out and feeling her Keyblade materialize. Yet she considered how her entire life she'd been shuffled around as a bargaining chip. By Xehanort's incarnations, Riku, Organization XIII... "Sora is the most selfless person I know. The worlds would have all been consumed by darkness by now if not for him!"

"And what of it! Has darkness not just as much right to exist as the light? Why is it that the darkness is forbidden from dominating the light, yet the light is free to scour the darkness from every corner of existence?"

Kairi faltered. Then, pushing her doubts aside, she said, "If you're not going to help me get Sora back, then I'm going to go find someone who will."

    "Will you, now? How?"

"I don't know! I just know that Sora's my friend, and he's helped me when I was in trouble over and over, so now that he's in trouble, I'm going to help him back!"

"The boy toyed with powers beyond his ken, heedless of warning, and is paying the rightful price for such transgression," the Bendu declared, and wind began to whip violently through Kairi's hair. "In reclaiming him, you would violate the same laws."

The earth shook, and his eyes glowed yellow. "Pure Heart or no," he said, his voice dropping to a thunderous rumble, "this cannot be permitted."

Lightning flashed overhead, and swirling dust and mist obscured the Bendu from view. His visage then billowed from the clouds overhead, his eyes boring through the darkness like searchlights. Kairi gasped.

    "I BRING DEATH!" he boomed.

2021 has been a fun year in gaming, and I want to know what you liked about it!

Here's a handful of categories for your consideration. Don't feel obligated to answer all of 'em, or even any of 'em! These are just prompts to get some conversation going.
    • Game of the Year
    • PC Game of the Year
    • Switch Game of the Year
    • Playstation Game of the Year
    • Xbox Game of the Year
    • Mobile Game of the Year
    • Best music
    • Best story
    • Best art
    • Best acting
    • Best ongoing game
    • Favorite pre-2021 game you first played in 2021
    • Favorite event or announcement
    -

I never play many games when they come out, and what I do play, I often don't necessarily play much of, so I usually feel a little distanced from year in review kind of stuff. But even if I didn't buy or beat many games, I still at least sampled a fair amount!

My favorite 2021 game, even though I've only played the demo, is Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. Back on the 3DS, I really wanted to like the Monster Hunter games, but the demos for each of them turned me off...until Monster Hunter Stories rolled around. I tore through its demo, and when a nice sale rolled around, I pounced on a copy, and I adored my time with it. When the sequel was announced, I was over the moon! And ultimately, everything about the game (so far lol) only improves on the foundation its predecessor set. The game's vistas are gorgeous, the battles have more complexity and depth, the characters and monsters look great, the music is lovely, the voice work is great... It's an enchanting and wholly satisfying experience (and I hope I get the full game later this month lol).

    Honorable mentions:
    • Deltarune (*I'm including it as a 2021 game because of Chapter 2, even if I haven't gotten to that part yet)
    • Sky: Children of the Light (*Switch release)
    • NEO: The World Ends with You
Now, if we were to go into some specific categories...

    Favorite music:
    • NEO: The World Ends with You
    • Deltarune
    • Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
Favorite music from games I haven't played but I have vibed out of my skull listening to their soundtracks on Youtube anyway:
    • Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker
    • NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...
    Favorite art:
    • Cris Tales
    • Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars
    • NEO: The World Ends with You

Do you need a party to join in Union χ? Conversely, do you need some more members for your party? Drop your requests in here! Whether seeking a party or players, make sure you mention your play level (e.g., casual or hardcore, beginner or veteran, etc.) and what Union you belong to.

    Enjoy the Lux collecting together!

    Kingdom Hearts Unchained χ
launched on iOS and Android in the west on April 7, 2016. On April 5, I pitched an idea to the rest of the KHV staff: What if we set up official KHV parties within the game? And we set to work organizing said parties and even a weekly leaderboard to go with them, so we could have some friendly competition in the community. We launched the parties on the game's release day, and after a delay from our intended July launch, the first leaderboard went up on August 8, 2016.

Four years later, we're well into Union χ, and Dark Road is on the horizon. But with the continued declines in activity in both the KHV community and within the in-game parties, we've decided that it's time to retire the KHV parties and leaderboards. For those who still play the game (or who will in the future), a party recruitment thread will be created so you can still play with your friends from the community.

I'd like to thank, first of all, my fellow staff members who helped brainstorm and organize this whole thing. I'd also like to specifically thank everyone who helped out as a party leader (in alphabetical order): @Aelin, @Arch, @Calxiyn, @Cat~, @Explode, @Fearless, @Karuta, @Krowley, @LadyAzura, and @Scarred Nobody. And one more special thank you to @Plums for editing that lovely header image for the leaderboards. And lastly, thank you to everyone who played with us, no matter for how long, or for how much Lux you contributed. Thank you all for the fun times. We'll see each other at the Daybreak Town fountain plaza again!

May your heart be your guiding key! Aced did nothing wrong! Ursus forever!

To commemorate almost four years of the KHV leaderboards, here are some records I've compiled!
