On second thought the Japanese and French themes complement each other : the Japanese one has poetic lyrics, it displays roses shows Oscar nude. It' s all about the feminine side of the character.

The French one uses drums, the music was written with a military structure, it displays action shots and the lyrics are entirely dedicated to explaining how boyish she is. It' s all about the masculine side of the character.

Now that you describe it like such, I like it significantly more. But it's still not pleasant on its own, i.e. I probably wouldn't listen to it if not for the association. Perhaps if I watched the series in French, and listened to it before every ep. it would grow on me considerably...

I've always disliked Oscar's portrayal at the end of the series. It was quite disrespectful, I hear no one speak of this--? Perhaps because it's an old show. But she becomes more "feminine" for Andre, despite the fact he assaulted her-- of course we are supposed to feel pity toward him after he loses his eyesight. It'd be OK if Oskar genuinely *wanted* to explore her femininity, but as far as we [the audience] know she is submitting to social pressure.

There is for instance a very big diff. between how Fersen reacts toward Oscar's femininity (recall the ball scene wherein she appears as a lady) and how Andre acts. IIRC, Fersen has difficulty recognising "Lady" Oscar but once he reconciles the two distinct images of her-- as a military strategist, and as a fair woman-- he loves her. That rascal Andre refuses to accept Oscar as she is.

cn you tell I really dislike andre. rose of versailles would have been 400% better sans him. I also disliked how Rosalie's role was reduced. :-( my favorite lesbian grisette

I hear no one talk about it period.

To be perfectly honest with you, premise aside, I don' t remember the story at all. There was no internet to keep up with the episodes we couldn' t catch on TV, and at such a young age half of the story would have been lost on me anyway. It' s one of the brainy 80' s kids shows I still haven' t given a second chance. What brought it back to my mind is the recent controversy regarding the absence of a female main character in Assassin' s Creed Unity.
