Digital. Unfortunately, it's very rare to find physical deals for new releases, especially at such a big discount.

 

Bendis seems off his game ever since Bagley left
Death of a Goblin was good but everything else is just.. whatever. about to get to War of the Symbiotes. the characterizations feel inconsistent when they never did before, and the Peter and Mary relationship doesn't feel as strong as it once did. and then theres the thing that Kitty is in waaay too much of this. i don't know if that's a character that Bendis really likes or something but he keeps making these very uncomfortable and unnecessary references to her past relationship with Peter. like just stop it. at this point the thing to do is have Peter and Mary have a stable relationship but he keeps challenging it. it's not like there's serious tension or anything but it doesn't feel as sweet and as honest as it did before. it's there but it doesn't seem quite as thoughtful. and there's been literally no mention of the themes that were dominating this book for over 100 issues.

 

oh my god i'm going to be sick. i don't think i can read past page 16 of this ultimate spider-man revamp. you killed it Bendis. and not in a good way. actually, I don't even know what happened. but the things you're doing? this is sacrilege. this is not okay. I don't like anything post-Clone Saga in the original 133 issue run. I can't even bring myself to step back and look at it objectively because it's just so frustratingly antithetical to everything that I loved about this book. Is this Immonen's doing? how much say did he have on the story and characters? I don't understand how something can go from so amazingly perfect to.. not.

okay so reading more past the new #1 and thinking back to everything post-105 in the original 133, it's not bad, bad. I do still hold that there was some inconsistent characterization going on and I resist some of the decisions that were made in the later issues and in this new numbered run, but it's not really bad. There are good things about it but it seems like editorial decided (because I can't even fathom why Bendis would make these changes) to just.. change some of the characters to something completely different. Like Gwen is not even kind of the same person she was before. Mary Jane is very oddly insecure and moody which is also not who this character was originally. Peter's pretty much the same, aside from an arc that seemed to be completely dropped after the Clone Saga arc.

 

I just realized that Jaden Smith reminds me of Otto Rocket.

So it's getting close to 5am and I do believe I can see the sun coming up. I'm currently listening to some '80s megamix and have been listening to '80s music most of the night as I read fanfiction. Seems to be the logical thing to do when one cannot sleep.

I tried at least 3 times and failed miserably each time. Insomnia, yay.
