Spring Is Here!

Because people want to stupidly say today's the first day instead of tomorrow, I'll play along.

Question: When did spring start before it was decided that the first day would always officially be on the Vernal Equinox? Surely what season it is depends more on the weather than some arbitrarily chosen celestial event, right? It's been spring for at least a week no in my opinion.

Question: What about the Southern Hemisphere? Is it spring there too just because today is the Vernal Equinox?

 

Weather has no play in what season it is. We just associate certain weather patterns with the seasons, such as winter should have a lot of snow and ice. Last week on March 9, it got up to 71 degrees. What, does that mean it was spring? Nope. It was still winter.

Their seasons are the opposite of ours. When it's winter over here it's summer over there.

 

Oh, so that explains why today was so disgusting and miserable. Well, time to hole up in my room as much as possible and keep away from that stupid sunlight, heat, and humidity

 

So before there was an official date for when spring starts (the same day as the Vernal Equinox, which changes from year to year), how did people know when it was spring? According to you, weather has absolutely nothing to do with seasons, so how were they defined in the times before calenders existed?


I know that. I was trying to point out that this thread erases the experiences of people who live in the Southern Hemisphere.

 

Yes, but calendars exist now. I agree, back then it made sense to go by the weather.

Because we have dates now and don't need to use calendars.

Implying that calenders are a modern invention.

 

How? The purpose of a calender is to have an easy way of tracking what date it is. So (a) why does having dates mean that we no longer need calenders and (b) why does having dates make it necessary to completely redefine what makes a season what it is?

 

Out of all the things to argue about, you guys pick calendars.

Well we've exhausted every other topic. What do you suggest we argue about?

 

Calendars.

Before there were calendars and specific dates, as I said, it made complete sense to use the weather patterns as a line for roughly determining what season it was. Now that we have specific dates, we have no need to guess the season based on the weather. Even if it's January 10 and it's 70 degrees outside, it's still winter.
