I always said the intricacies and nuances of Black Mage's characterization made him undoubtedly the best character to grace fiction.

All it really proved is she's liked in her own game. It's not like she made top 10.

 

The argument I always hear is "Nobody likes Lightning, all the other characters are better, she has no personality"

But i she comes out on top in this poll, then clearly there are enough people that like her that she beats out other absurd fan favourites, like Cid Raines

Zell I can see maybe someone contriving a reason why he's good, but Raijin and Fujin? Next you'll be telling me Zoah was the most fleshed out character in Chrono Cross

I know ff7 has a large fan base. But really? 5 of the top 10? I don't want to sound like I dislike them but I didn't find the characters of that game to be too interesting for the most part.

Kefka has the benefit of memetic dialog, and being many people's first exposure to truly despicable self serving behavior
It's the if you can't act, overact thing really. Kefka lacks much in terms of personality or motivation, but he makes up for it by having grand scenes
Raijin and Fujin are the definition of one note
And I forgot you even mentioned Seifer because that's how forgettable Seifer is

I think the true tragedy here is that Balthier is not the top XII charcter.

 

Literally the only cool thing he does is cut Odin in half, and it makes no sense because he's not particularly strong
But seriously, Seifer was the weirdest thing. After hearing so much about him online before playing FF8, I expected him to... matter. Or something. But nope, he's practically a non-thing.
A common problem with FF8, really. All the potential is squandered because they honestly thought the lvoe story was good
